Mindy Kaling knew exactly what the world needed. Some adult-themed Scooby-Doo antics. While the series won’t focus on the full Mysery Inc. gang, it will focus on Velma and her own murder mystery-solving skills. HBO Max finally unveiled the official Velma logo and we are loving the throwback to Scooby-Doo’s font.
The series will act as an origin story for Velma. It will see her in high school attempting to stop a serial killer who is attempting to kill all the popular kids in town.
“I felt great because these are really intense fans, you know — cartoon, comic book fans, those are huge fans. And especially a legacy show like this. Then it was announced about a month ago that the Velma character would be reimagined as South Asian, and people were not happy. She’s such a great character. She’s so smart. And I just couldn’t understand how people couldn’t imagine a really smart, nerdy girl with terrible eyesight and who loved to solve mysteries could not be Indian. Like, there are Indian nerds. It shouldn’t be a surprise to people.” She told Seth Myers.
In addition, Kaling hinted at Fred, Daphne, and Shaggy all being in the series as well. However, there isn’t any Scooby or any Mystery Inc. van just yet.
We can’t wait to see the finished product and exactly how adult the series is. It is pretty telling that the first image teased from the series featured a girl with her skull cut open and her brain scooped out.
We will keep you updated on Velma. Stay tuned!
