The Exorcist Trilogy is now in search of a new director. David Gordon Green announced that he has left the franchise due to scheduling conflicts with his other upcoming projects ‘Nutcrackers’ and ‘The Righteous Gemstone’. The Exorcist: Deceiver has now been delayed indefinitely and has been pulled off Universal‘s movie slate for the time being. The movie was originally set to debut in spring 2025.

The Exorcist: Believer which was released last year was the first chapter in a trilogy of films that were estimated to be a big hit by Blumhouse. While the film made an impressive $137M on a $30M budget, this was not the success the studio sought. The company invested a total of $400M for the rights to produce 3 of the films which would barely make the money back if all the films performed the same.

The first film’s synopsis states “Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding has raised their daughter on his own. But when Angela and her friend Katherine, disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil.”

This is a major setback for this upcoming franchise and puts Universal in a tight spot as now they have to find a director willing to take on this franchise with lots of money on the line.
