‘The Boogeyman’ Horror Movie Review

I’ve gotta confess, when word first broke that The Boogeyman was hitting screens again, I was hoping for a revival that could wash out the taste of the 2005 film. And I feel this movie delivers. The movie poster makes it clear – this terror trip comes straight “From the Mind of Stephen King,” a nod to the short story that forms its spooky backbone.

The acting is tight, the plot has teeth, and the suspense will have you checking your locks twice before bedtime. One of the unique hooks is the Boogeyman’s uncanny taste for gloom, feeding on the desolation that trails in the wake of sadness and despair. And where does this creature reside? In the unlit corners and shadowy closets that make every bump in the night a potential nightmare.

Chris Messina plays the bereaved father with the kind of visceral vulnerability that leaves your gut in knots. As a single parent to his daughters, Sadie and Sawyer, each actress delivers performances that would make seasoned veterans proud. There’s this one moment with Sadie, who’s been ignoring her sister’s warnings about the Boogeyman. A bully shoves her into a dark room, forcing her to confront the very monster she dismissed. It’s intense, evoking memories of the closet horrors from the ’82 classic Poltergeist.

When the Boogeyman finally shows his face, the creature doesn’t disappoint. The alien-like figure lurks in the shadows, armed with spider-like legs that would make even the bravest among us shudder. Living in darkness, its weakness to light adds an interesting layer to the story, not to mention a good reason to keep a nightlight on hand.

But here’s the thing: this isn’t just a film about ghouls and ghosts. It taps into the deeper horrors of depression, offering a relatable, and sometimes painful, exploration of human vulnerability. Some moviegoers have argued that it’s slow-paced and lacks scare factor, but for me, the pace was just right. It kept me on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next shadow to move.

And that finale? It’s the kind of ending that hints at a sequel. If you’re a fan of chillers like “The Conjuring” or the aforementioned Poltergeist, this movie should be next on your must-watch list. I’m giving The Boogeyman a solid 4 out of 5. I can’t wait to dive into this terror all over again – maybe next time, I’ll even brave it with the lights off.
