The Best New Horror Movies Coming to Streaming Platforms This Week

Published

on

It’s everyone’s favorite time of the week. It’s time to discover which new terrifying horror films are coming to streaming platforms. Below is our carefully categorized list of all the new horror flicks that you will soon be able to enjoy. So, grab some snacks, this is a long one.

Impuratus-October 12th-VOD

Impuratus Movie Poster

Possession films are getting a little played out at this point. With even The Exorcist Believer getting pretty low critic review scores this week. But Impuratus may just have the added touch we’ve been looking for.

This isn’t just an exorcist film, it’s an LA Noir style exorcist film. Not to mention it also stars the amazing Tom Sizemore (The Relic) as the lead. Will this be enough to make it stand out in an oversaturated market? Stream Impuratus on October 12th to find out.

The Goldsmith-October 12th-VOD

The Goldsmith Poster

This is a tale as old as time. Criminals break into a house looking for a place to hide out only to find that the people that they have kidnapped are serial killers. Have we seen it before? Yes. But this time it’s in Italian, so it should be extra gory.

Written and directed by Vincenzo Ricchiuto (Milano in the Cage), this film promises to continue the Italian horror tradition of making you squirm whenever there is an eyeball in the shot. If you a fan of blood and gore, stream The Goldsmith on October 12th, via VOD.

In The Fire-October 13th-VOD

In The Fire Poster

Amber Heard has been catching a lot of media attention recently. And not all of it has been about her acting prowess. But this film isn’t about her. It’s about a little autistic boy who may also be the anti-Christ.

As someone who has autism, I am glad that we are finally getting the media representation that we deserve. Initial screenings of this film didn’t resonate with audiences very well, but horror rarely does. If you want to make your own assessment of the film, go stream In the Fire on October 13, via VOD.

15 Cameras-October 13th-VOD

15 Cameras Poster

The recent obsession with all things true crime is a bit of a weird Phenomenon. We idly sit and watch or listen to the most graphic depictions of the worst acts imaginable while we drink our morning coffee each day. And 15 Cameras looks like it has a few comments about all of this.

It asks a simple question of the audience. Would you buy a house that popped up on a true crime podcast? This film seems to be equal parts social commentary and gory slasher. If that sounds awesome to you, then go stream 15 Cameras on October 13th, via VOD.

The Puppetman-October 13th-Shudder

The Puppetman Poster

I get excited every time there is a Shudder original on these weekly round ups. They aren’t always the best films, but they normally provide something I haven’t seen a thousand times before.

The Puppetman looks to follow in that line of originality. This film offers us a different approach to the demonic spirit subgenre. In this film it doesn’t just possess people, it has the power to turn them into puppets. If you want to see what that would even look like, stream The Puppetman on October 13th, via Shudder.

Dark Harvest-October 13th-VOD

Dark Harvest Poster

Based on the book of the same name, Dark Harvest offers us a rare treat. A horror movie that’s actually set around Halloween. You would think that the genre would be saturated by these kinds of films but there aren’t as many of them as you would think.

Think of Dark Harvest like an apocalyptic version of Children of the Corn and you will have some idea of what this film is about. If you are a fan of novel adaptations, go stream Dark Harvest on October 13th, via VOD.

The Conference-October 13th-Netflix

The Conference Poster

Netflix original horror flicks are a hard group to categorize. They gave us Haunting of Hill House, which is considered one of the best horror miniseries of all time. But they also created The Open House, which is one of the worst horror films ever made, so it’s hard to say what to expect from the studio.

The Conference looks like it may land somewhere in the middle of these films. Providing viewers with a standard office slasher flick. If you are a fan of some who don it action, go stream The Conference on October 13th, via Netflix.

The Bell Keeper-October 13th-VOD

The Bell Keeper Poster

This trailer has every horror trope there is. We have the dismissive teens searching out a haunted location, someone is looking for a lost relative, and they even have a harbinger warning them not to go to said haunted location.

Some people may take that as a red flag, I say bring it on. The more tropes you shove into a horror flick, the more fun I get to have naming the references. If you want something that feels familiar, go stream The Bell Keeper on October 13th, via VOD.

Herd-October 13th-VOD

Herd Movie Poster

If a FrightFest London selection means anything to you, then you are going to want to watch Herd. This film is a mashup of queer horror, southern gothic, and somehow also features plague zombies.

That may sound like too many themes shoved into a short runtime. But I put my faith in the good people at Frightfest, if they say it’s worth watching, I’ll be there. If you are a fan of indie horror, go stream Herd on October 13th, via VOD.

Dear David-October 13th-VOD

Dear David Poster

Well, here is one no one would have predicted, a horror movie centered around Buzzfeed. For those unaware, Buzzfeed is traditionally labeled a millennial website, and not a good one at that. It is widely known for producing those Harry Potter personality tests.

This film is somehow inspired by true events. Inspired by events that happened when a Buzzfeed comic illustrator became haunted by an online commenter. If that sounds as bonkers to you as it does to me, stream Dear David on October 13th, via VOD.

Thrills and Chills: Ranking ‘Radio Silence’ Films from Bloody Brilliant to Just Bloody

Published

on

Radio Silence Films

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, and Chad Villella are all filmmakers under the collective label called Radio Silence. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are the primary directors under that moniker while Villella produces.

They have gained popularity over the past 13 years and their films have become known as having a certain Radio Silence “signature.” They are bloody, usually contain monsters, and have breakneck action sequences. Their recent film Abigail exemplifies that signature and is perhaps their best film yet. They are currently working on a reboot of John Carpenter’s Escape From New York.

We thought we would go through the list of projects they have directed and rank them from high to low. None of the movies and shorts on this list are bad, they all have their merits. These rankings from top to bottom are just ones we felt showcased their talents the best.

We didn’t include movies they produced but didn’t direct.

#1. Abigail

An update to the second film on this list, Abagail is the natural progression of Radio Silence’s love of lockdown horror. It follows in pretty much the same footsteps of Ready or Not, but manages to go one better — make it about vampires.

Abigail

#2. Ready or Not

This film put Radio Silence on the map. While not as successful at the box office as some of their other films, Ready or Not proved that the team could step outside their limited anthology space and create a fun, thrilling, and bloody adventure-length film.

Ready or Not

#3. Scream (2022)

While Scream will always be a polarizing franchise, this prequel, sequel, reboot — however you want to label it showed just how much Radio Silence knew the source material. It wasn’t lazy or cash-grabby, just a good time with legendary characters we love and new ones who grew on us.

Scream (2022)

#4 Southbound (The Way Out)

Radio Silence tosses their found footage modus operandi for this anthology film. Responsible for the bookend stories, they create a terrifying world in their segment titled The Way Out, which involves strange floating beings and some sort of time loop. It’s kind of the first time we see their work without a shaky cam. If we were to rank this entire film, it would remain at this position on the list.

Southbound

#5. V/H/S (10/31/98)

The film that started it all for Radio Silence. Or should we say the segment that started it all. Even though this isn’t feature-length what they managed to do with the time they had was very good. Their chapter was titled 10/31/98, a found-footage short involving a group of friends who crash what they think is a staged exorcism only to learn not to assume things on Halloween night.

V/H/S

#6. Scream VI

Cranking up the action, moving to the big city and letting Ghostface use a shotgun, Scream VI turned the franchise on its head. Like their first one, this film played with canon and managed to win over a lot of fans in its direction, but alienated others for coloring too far outside the lines of Wes Craven’s beloved series. If any sequel was showing how the trope was going stale it was Scream VI, but it managed to squeeze some fresh blood out of this nearly three-decade mainstay.

Scream VI

#7. Devil’s Due

Fairly underrated, this, Radio Silence’s first feature-length film, is a sampler of things they took from V/H/S. It was filmed in an omnipresent found footage style, showcasing a form of possession, and features clueless men. Since this was their first bonafide major studio job it’s a wonderful touchstone to see how far they have come with their storytelling.

7 Great ‘Scream’ Fan Films & Shorts Worth a Watch

Published

on

The Scream franchise is such an iconic series, that many budding filmmakers take inspiration from it and make their own sequels or, at least, build upon the original universe created by screenwriter Kevin Williamson. YouTube is the perfect medium to showcase these talents (and budgets) with fan-made homages with their own personal twists.

The great thing about Ghostface is that he can appear anywhere, in any town, he just needs the signature mask, knife, and unhinged motive. Thanks to Fair Use laws it’s possible to expand upon Wes Craven’s creation by simply getting a group of young adults together and killing them off one by one. Oh, and don’t forget the twist. You’ll notice that Roger Jackson’s famous Ghostface voice is uncanny valley, but you get the gist.

We have gathered five fan films/shorts related to Scream that we thought were pretty good. Although they can’t possibly match the beats of a $33 million blockbuster, they get by on what they have. But who needs money? If you’re talented and motivated anything is possible as proven by these filmmakers who are well on their way to the big leagues.

Take a look at the below films and let us know what you think. And while you’re at it, leave these young filmmakers a thumbs up, or leave them a comment to encourage them to create more films. Besides, where else are you going to see Ghostface vs. a Katana all set to a hip-hop soundtrack?
