They tried to do a remake in 2006, but nothing compares to the original Black Christmas from 1974. This gritty thriller may have coined the phrase “slasher.” Starring Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder, the atmospheric horror movie became a cult classic. Who would have guessed its director Bob Clark would go on to become a prolific comedy director? He is responsible for movies such as Porky’s and A Christmas Story.

Black Christmas will hit theaters in the U.S. and Canada starting December 7 and run through December 22.

Black Christmas (1974)

When Black Christmas was released, the world was just getting over The Exorcist. They thought that was the scariest movie of all time, and it was. But Black Christmas was just as effective. Instead of a supernatural force, Clark made his human, but with just as much perversity. Like The Exorcist, he also gave his monster a disturbing voice spouting obscenities and filth.

Black Christmas has become a holiday classic, and no one has been able to replicate Clark’s unnerving atmosphere even though they tried in 2006 to below par results.
