Director, Matt Reeves has finally announced that Cloverfield is indeed a bit of a prequel to Escape From New York. While talking with comicbook.com, Reeves said confirmed that his giant monster movie was indeed a direct nod to John Carpenter’s classic.
Comicbook.com spoke to Reeves in support of the upcoming 4K UHD release of Cloverfield. If you recall the original poster of Escape From New York and the addition of the Statue of Liberty’s head being featured decapitated at street level. That moment was initiated in the beginning of Cloverfield when the head of the statue is hurled through the city by the giant monster.
“That’s actually where the idea came from because I think J.J. [Abrams] had that poster … Look, that’s a critical moment in the movie because at first, the whole thing feels like a terrorist event, and so it’s got the grimness of that, and then when the head of the Statue of Liberty seems to have been pitched down the street, you know something else is happening.” Reeves told Comicbook.com. “That’s when you realize you’re in the world of a giant monster and that’s this whole thing that pushes it to another level.”
That is a very cool connection. I like that the city had a completely different history. It explains the destruction and look of NY in the Carpenter film.
