James Wan’s ‘Archive 81’ is Currently Ranked Number One on Netflix

Folks Are Crazy About the Mystery of Archive 81

by Trey Hilburn III

The James Wan executive produced Archive 81 has blown up on Netflix. The eight-episode series is a whirlwind of a mystery and spookiness that is reminiscent of Session 9 and  Rosemary’s Baby. It seems that the more questions that come up in the mystery also include an increase of the effective creepiness of the show. Over the weekend the series managed to increase its reach to the point of knocking out Cobra Kai.

Archive 81 still sits in the number one spot and has had folks online trying to figure out some of the shows esoteric intricacies. While James wan is onboard as an executive producer with his Atomic Monster production company, it is Rebecca Sonnenshine who is the series showrunner and head honcho.

“I’m obsessed with mystery box shows, the kind that lead us down a rabbit hole into a strange, dark world.” Sonnenshine said. “Archive 81 is a character-driven, deeply emotional story about the nature of art, faith, and the search for identity — all wrapped up in a frayed blanket of existential dread. The show also gave this film geek the chance to unearth all sorts of forgotten media formats as found footage, which results in a unique, visually-textured story that is both beautiful and terrifying.”

The synopsis for Archive 81 goes like this:

Archive 81 follows archivist Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie), who takes a job restoring a collection of damaged videotapes from 1994. Reconstructing the work of a documentary filmmaker named Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi), he is drawn into her investigation of a dangerous cult at the Visser apartment building. As the season unfolds across these two timelines, Dan slowly finds himself obsessed with uncovering what happened to Melody. When the two characters form a mysterious connection, Dan becomes convinced he can save her from the terrifying end she met 25 years ago.
