One of the most successful films in the Godzilla franchise, Godzilla Minus One, has blown both fans and critics away with its recent success at the box office. The film recently surpassed $100M at the box office and was nominated for Best Visual Effects for the 2024 Oscars. Director Takashi Yamazaki was recently interviewed by Hobby Japan Web and was asked whether or not a sequel was in the works. He stated, “No, no, there is no such talk at all.” This may come as a shock, but hopefully, there will be talks in the future. You can check out more of what he said in the interview down below.
In the full statement from Director Takashi Yamazaki, he states “No, no, there is no such talk at all. But I might be a little sad if someone else is chosen to direct the next Godzilla movie. When someone says, ‘This is the person who will direct the next Godzilla,’ I think, ‘Ah!’ And when someone says, ‘Please do it,’ I think, ‘Ah!’ (laughs). If I were to direct the next movie, I would like to do a sequel to this one, but since there have been two standalone Godzilla movies in a row, I think the next movie will probably have to include an enemy monster.”
The company behind the film, Toho Co., Ltd. said they wanted to take time on the next film in the franchise and develop a good script and cast. No update was given as to whether the next film would be a direct sequel or a standalone movie. It was mentioned they wanted to look beyond live-action films and focus on new Godzilla content.
Godzilla Minus One followed the story of “a post-war Japan that is at its lowest point when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster, baptized in the horrific power of the atomic bomb.” It was written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki. The film stars Minami Hamabe, Sakura Ando, Ryunosuke Kamiki, and many more.“
While it may be a while before another Godzilla film from Toho Co., Ltd., hopefully, they decide to bring back Takashi Yamazaki to direct the next entry. With them wanting to look beyond live-action, it may be an animated film or possible TV series next in line. What do you think about this most recent news about a possible sequel?
