As they say, “All good things must come to an end.” Such is the case for Friday the 13th The Game, which launched in 2017. It was an exciting time for fans of the series and immediately became a multiplayer phenomenon despite a few early glitches. Gun Interactive, the developer behind the game, announced last year that their license to the franchise property would expire tonight.
When it first launched iHorror gave the game a positive review: “When the game is working as intended it is insanely fun and terrifying depending on which end of the spectrum you end up on. Friday The 13th The Game does have an option that allows you to choose your preference as to who you would rather play as, Jason or the counselors, but do keep in mind it is still randomly chosen.”
Soon after, players would post scenes of their gameplay on social media further fueling interest. Once patches were issued and gameplay became smoother Friday the 13th The Game became a cult favorite. It kept people entertained through the pandemic and even got a release of all places on the Nintendo Switch.
However, as the game fades away there is still hope for the IP and perhaps we will see some form of Jason Voorhees in the future. Peacock is currently developing a series called Crystal Lake and earlier this year it was announced a new venture called Jason Universe, with original writer Victor Miller attached, went live.
We will have to wait and see what happens, if anything, regarding a new Friday the 13th video game. There have been rumors of a new one, but so far nothing has been set in stone.
