Director, André Øvredal’s latest film brings Dracula to life via The Last Voyage of the Demeter. This chapter tells the under-explored tale of Dracula’s voyage across the sea. Of course, Dracula turned it into a death ship. The Last Voyage of the Demeter underperformed at the box office. Partly due to the fact that the title didn’t reveal that it was the tale of a Universal Monster story or that it revealed Drac! All in all, the film only brought in $15 million worldwide.

Now, The Last Voyage of the Demeter is streaming at home. You can rent it yourself for $19.99 or purchase it for $24.99. The hope being that the film is able to make back some of its lost box office dough.

The synopsis for The Last Voyage of the Demeter goes like this:

Based on a single chilling chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London. Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew.

The film stars Corey Hawkins (In the Heights, Straight Outta Compton) as Clemens, a doctor who joins the Demeter crew, Aisling Franciosi (Game of Thrones, The Nightingale) as an unwitting stowaway, Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones, Clash of the Titans) as the ship’s captain and David Dastmalchian (Dune, the Ant-Man franchise) as the Demeter’s first mate.

This is one of those really sad breaks. The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a great go-round. It’s a blast with tons of rad monster effects with some gore to go. Its a bummer that it didn’t make more at the box office. Now, we surely will not be receiving another Universal Monsters tale for a good while.
