Dexter is a beloved story about a serial killer who believes he is more or less the good guy. Audiences fell in love with the morally confused protagonist and stuck with the series for 8 years to its conclusion.
Luckily, it would seem that more Dexter will soon be on the way. Back in February of 2023, Showtime announced that they would be creating a Dexter prequel for fans to sink their teeth into. This prequel will follow a young Dexter as he evolves into everyone’s favorite homicidal heart throb. The official synopsis of the show can be found below.
Dexter: Original Sin, set in 1991 Miami, follows young Dexter Morgan as he transforms from student to avenging serial killer. Guided by his father, Harry, he adopts a Code and begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.
A Report from Deadline lays out the new casting information that has been released for the series. Patrick Gibson (Shadow and Bone) will play our titular character, with Christian Slater (Heathers) playing his father. Molly Brown (Lost Girls) is also joining the cast as Dexter’s younger Sister, Debra.
While we don’t know much about the plot of the series at this time, it has been confirmed that the original showrunner, Clyde Phillips, will be making a return for the prequel. Not only that, but Michael Lehmann, the director of Heathers, will be rejoining Slater for this production.
As of now, the series is expected to run for ten episodes. Dexter: Original Sin will be available to stream on Paramount + with Showtime upon release. Interestingly enough, this may not be the end of the road for the Dexter mythology.
Philips is planning on extending the lore of the franchise by exploring some of the other notable killers in the show such as the Trinity Killer. Will these spin off series have the same alluring pull as the original Dexter? We will just have to wait and see.
