‘The Pale Door’ Bewitches With its Cowboys Vs Witches Good Time

Published

on

Pale Door

If you are a fan of Aaron B. Koontz and Cameron Burns’ film Scare Package, you came to the right place with their latest western-horror cocktail, The Pale Door. Again, the team executes an innovative and propulsive approach that comes from their reverence and passion for genre.

This time around, we are dealing with a brothel of witches and some bank-robbing cowboys instead of Rad Chad and his emporium of horror anthology.

The Pale Door focuses on The Dalton Gang and a particular train robbery in which they steal more than they can deal with in the form of a young girl locked in a steamer trunk. When the gang heads out to lay low at a brothel, all hell breaks loose over a night of cowboys vs witches in a battle for survival.

I’d be remiss to tell you that the film is just that. There are plenty of emotional punch points laying in its undercurrent. Gripping and emotional bits of what it is to be family – particularly what it is to be brothers. But, its more fun to discover those organically while watching because they are the real currency of the entire picture.

“The make-up effects are really cool

and best of all they are practical.”

Fans of westerns are in a for a huge treat with The Pale Door. In fact, a large portion of the film is a straight-up, full-fledged western picture. Even in that, the film makes nice choices between committing to emotional weight and the ability to switch to pulpy, dime-store western magazine fun. The film also is a who’s-who of easter egg shots. Several scenes are framed beautifully and pay homage to greats like, The Long Riders, Pale Rider and others. The ability to make those bits of homage feel entirely organic assists in creating a larger and classic approach to the experience.

Pale Door

Much like From Dusk Till Dawn, The Pale Door waits to spring the supernatural fun on the audience. This time instead of vampires, we are attacked by a special brand of witches. It’s a really fun approach to the classic witch too. These particular witches are vicious and share a lot more physical traits as demons and werewolves do. They are the running on the ceiling, jump across rooms and tear your eyeballs out kind of witches, as opposed to the classic toil and trouble version of cinema’s crones.

The make-up effects are really cool and best of all they are practical. The attacking witches are entirely made up of burnt flesh. The make-up created for them along with the addition of perfectly lit encounters are a nice melding of two departments working entirely in sync. The make-up team does a really nice job with its shoot ‘em up portions of the film too. Creating great moments like one where a cowboy is stapled to a wall by his neck, using a gigantic hunting knife. More of that kind of thing, please!

The score for The Pale Door absolutely rules. It takes classic western score fragments and subverts them entirely, creating something that works well with the film’s jukes and turns from horror to western. I’ll definitely be looking to add it to the collection.

“The Pale Door is a

fantastically fun and innovative

weaving of western and horror fare”

Everyone in this cast is phenomenal. From Pat Healy’s austere and calculated approach to his character Wylie, to the larger than life and amiable role that Stan Shaw fills – The Pale Door is a film that would work even if it was just this cast sitting around a table playing cards. So, when you take that and add in witches, wolves and shoot ‘em up scenes it immediately just works. Ultimately, the amazing cast grounds the entire thing and does a really nice job of keeping the film on a carefully walked line of the fanciful horror and well-executed emotional punches.

Pale Door

Melora Walters is absolutely incredible as the leader of this particular brothel of witches. Walters has this magical ability of creating a character with just as much quiet menace as she evokes sympathy. She executes everyone of her choices with elegance even when they are at their most terror driven. It’s great to see Walters show up in a horror film. She is an actress who has had me devoted to anything she does ever since starring in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia. She has a weightless, intensity that is singular and she definitely brings it in droves to The Pale Door.

The Pale Door is a fantastically fun and innovative weaving of western and horror fare. It’s ability to balance the effective emotional drama with its exciting horror and faithful western elements is an accomplishment. An accomplishment that is a blast to watch. It’s simultaneously an extreme bit of witchy terror, cowboy shoot ‘em up pulp and truly fun cinema.

The Pale Door is now available in theaters, on Demand and Digital. Check local showtimes.

A24 Reportedly “Pulls Plug” On Peacock’s ‘Crystal Lake’ Series

Published

on

Crystal

Film studio A24 might not be going forward with its planned Peacock Friday the 13th spinoff called Crystal Lake according to Fridaythe13thfranchise.com. The website quotes entertainment blogger Jeff Sneider who made a statement on his webpage through a subscription paywall.

“I’m hearing that A24 has pulled the plug on Crystal Lake, its planned Peacock series based on the Friday the 13th franchise featuring masked killer Jason Voorhees. Bryan Fuller was due to executive produce the horror series.

It’s unclear whether this is a permanent decision or a temporary one, as A24 had no comment. Perhaps Peacock will help the trades shed more light on this project, which was announced back in 2022.”

Back in January 2023, we reported that some big names were behind this streaming project including Bryan Fuller, Kevin Williamson, and Friday the 13th Part 2 final girl Adrienne King.

Fan Made Crystal Lake Poster

“‘Crystal Lake info from Bryan Fuller! They officially start writing in 2 weeks (writers are here in the audience).” tweeted social media writer Eric Goldman who tweeted the info while attending a Friday the 13th 3D screening event in January 2023. “It will have two scores to choose from – a modern one and a classic Harry Manfredini one. Kevin Williamson is writing an episode. Adrienne King will have a recurring role. Yay! Fuller has pitched four seasons for Crystal Lake. Only one officially ordered so far though he notes Peacock would have to pay a pretty hefty penalty if they didn’t order a Season 2. Asked if he can confirm Pamela’s role in the Crystal Lake series, Fuller replied ‘We’re honestly going to be covering it all. The series is covering the life and times of these two characters’ (presumably he’s referring to Pamela and Jason there!)'”

Whether or not Peacock is moving forward with the project is unclear and since this news is secondhand information, it still has to be verified which will require Peacock and/or A24 to make an official statement which they have yet to do.

But keep checking back to iHorror for the latest updates to this developing story.

New Images for MaXXXine Show A Bloody Kevin Bacon and Mia Goth in all Her Glory

Kevin Bacon in MaXXXine

Ti West (X) has been knocking it out of the park with his sexy horror trilogy as of late. While we still have some time to kill before MaXXXine releases, Entertainment Weekly has dropped some images to wet our appetite while we wait.

It feels like just yesterday X was shocking audiences with its granny horror porno shoot. Now, we are just months ways from Maxxxine shocking the world once again. Fans can check out Maxine’s new 80s inspired adventure in theatres on July 5th, 2024.

MaXXXine

West is known for taking horror in new directions. And it looks as though he plans to do the same with MaXXXine. In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, he had the following to say.

“If you’re expecting it to be part of this X movie and people will be killed, yeah, I’m going to deliver on all those things. But it’s going to zig instead of zag in a lot of places that people aren’t expecting. It’s a very decadent world that she lives in, and it’s a very aggressive world that she lives in, but the threat shows up in an unexpected way.”

MaXXXine

We can also expect MaXXXine to be the biggest movie in the franchise. West isn’t holding anything back for the third installment. “The thing that the other two movies don’t have is that sort of scope. To try to do a big, sprawling Los Angeles ensemble movie is what the movie was, and that’s just a big undertaking. There’s a kind of noir-ish mystery vibe to the movie that’s very fun.”

However, it looks as though MaXXXine will be the end of this saga. Although West has some other ideas for our beloved killer, he believes this will be the end of her story.

That’s all the information we have at this time. Make sure to check back here for more news and updates.

The Tall Man Funko Pop! Is a Reminder of the Late Angus Scrimm

Published

Phantasm tall man Funko pop

The Funko Pop! brand of figurines is finally paying homage to one of the scariest horror movie villains of all time, The Tall Man from Phantasm. According to Bloody Disgusting the toy was previewed by Funko this week.

The creepy otherworldly protagonist was played by the late Angus Scrimm who passed away in 2016. He was a journalist and B-movie actor who became a horror movie icon in 1979 for his role as the mysterious funeral home owner known as The Tall Man. The Pop! also includes the bloodsucking flying silver orb The Tall Man used as a weapon against trespassers.

Phantasm

He also spoke one of the most iconic lines in independent horror, “Boooy! You play a good game, boy, but the game is finished. Now you die!”

There is no word on when this figurine will be released or when preorders will go on sale, but it’s nice to see this horror icon remembered in vinyl.
