One Hour Photo (2002), courtesy Twentieth Century Fox.

One Hour Photo

One Hour Photo is about a photo processing technician who becomes obsessed with one of his customer famiies whose pictures he has been developing for years.  It starts out with just snooping in on their photos, but eventually escalates to full-on stalking.

This 2002 creepfest will change anyone’s opinion of the late Robin Williams.  The famous funnyman plays the unstable photo tech, and he proves that he is more than just a jokester; there are legitimate acting chops here.  Check out One Hour Photo here at TubiTV.

Midnight Express (1978), courtesy Columbia Pictures.

Midnight Express

Midnight Express is more crime drama than horror movie, but there are plenty of moments to inspire sleeplessness in the audience.  Made in 1978, the movie is based on a true story about an American tourist who is caught smuggling hashish overseas and thrown into a Turkish prison.  His experiences on the inside are exactly what one would expect from a stay in a Turkish prison.

More powerful than a dozen of Nancy Reagan’s “Just Say No” ads, Midnight Express is tense, violent, and disturbing.  And it can be found here at Crackle.

Deep Blue Sea (1999), courtesy Warner Bros.

Deep Blue Sea

Deep Blue Sea is about a group of researchers in an undersea lab who genetically enlarge the brains of sharks in order to study the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.  Of course, the big-brained sharks rebel and start systematically hunting the humans.

This 1999 sharksploitation flick was directed by Renny Harlin and features an all-star cast which includes Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Rapaport, Stellan Skarsgard, LL Cool J, Thomas Jane, Saffron Burrows, and Jacqueline McKenzie.  It’s also got one of the greatest death scenes of all time (NO SPOILERS!).  Dive into Deep Blue Sea here at TubiTV.

Mazes and Monsters (1982), courtesy CBS.

Mazes and Monsters

Mazes and Monsters is a television movie from 1982 about a quartet of college kids that plays a cool role-playing game called, of course, Mazes and Monsters.  One of the kids takes the game too seriously and starts to believe that he is actually living inside of his group’s campaign, thinking that everyone he meets is a monster that needs to be slayed.

Anyone who is familiar with the Satanic Panic of the early eighties will be able to discern that Mazes and Monsters is a thinly veiled indictment of the popular RPG Dungeons and Dragons.  This cool little slice of eighties pop culture was based on a book by Rona Jaffe and stars Chris Makepeace and Tom Hanks (yes, that Tom Hanks).  For years, it was considered a lost piece of television history, assumedly because of the controversial D&D subject matter.  But, more likely, it’s because Oscar actor Tom Hanks wanted it buried.  It’s not lost anymore – you can see Mazes and Monsters here at Crackle.

Mars Attacks! (1996), courtesy Warner Bros.

Mars Attacks!

Mars Attacks! is a hilarious 1996 spoof of fifties science fiction alien invasion movies.  It’s directed by the one and only Tim Burton, and the title is pretty self-explanatory – a group of Martians take advantage of the trustworthy Earthlings to stage an intergalactic invasion.

This one’s a slick, high-tech affair with tons of star power in the cast, an ensemble which includes Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Natalie Portman, Martin Short, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Michael J. Fox, Sarah Jessica Parker, Pam Grier, Jim Brown, Jack Black, and the list goes on for days.  You should just watch it for yourself here at TubiTV.

Renny Harlin’s Recent Horror Movie ‘Refuge’ Releasing in U.S. This Month

Published

on

War is hell, and in Renny Harlin’s latest film Refuge it seems that’s an understatement. The director whose work includes Deep Blue Sea, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and the upcoming reboot of The Strangers made Refuge last year and it played in Lithuania and Estonia this past November.

But it’s coming to select U.S. theaters and VOD starting on April 19th, 2024

Here is what it’s about: “Sergeant Rick Pedroni, who comes home to his wife Kate changed and dangerous after suffering an attack by a mysterious force during combat in Afghanistan.”

The story is inspired by an article producer Gary Lucchesi read in National Geographic about how wounded soldiers create painted masks as representations of how they feel.

Take a look at the trailer:

‘The Strangers’ Invaded Coachella in Instagramable PR Stunt

Published

on

Renny Harlin’s reboot of The Strangers isn’t coming out until May 17, but those murderous home invaders are making a pit stop at Coachella first.

In the latest Instagramable PR stunt, the studio behind the film decided to have the trio of masked intruders crash Coachella, a music festival that takes place for two weekends in Southern California.

The Strangers

This type of publicity began when Paramount did the same thing with their horror movie Smile in 2022. Their version had seemingly ordinary people in populated places look directly into a camera with an evil grin.

The Strangers

Harlin’s reboot is actually a trilogy with a more expansive world than that of the original.

“When setting out to remake The Strangers, we felt there was a bigger story to be told, which could be as powerful, chilling, and terrifying as the original and could really expand that world,” said producer Courtney Solomon. “Shooting this story as a trilogy allows us to create a hyperreal and terrifying character study. We’re fortunate to be joining forces with Madelaine Petsch, an amazing talent whose character is the driving force of this story.”

The Strangers

The movie follows a young couple (Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez) who “after their car breaks down in an eerie small town, are forced to spend the night in a remote cabin. Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motive in The Strangers: Chapter 1 the chilling first entry of this upcoming horror feature film series.”

The Strangers

The Strangers: Chapter 1 opens in theaters on May 17.

‘Alien’ Returning to Theaters For a Limited Time

Published

on

It’s been 45 years since Ridley Scott’s Alien hit theaters and in celebration of that milestone, it is headed back to the big screen for a limited time. And what better day to do that than Alien Day on April 26?

It also works as a primer for the upcoming Fede Alvarez sequel Alien: Romulus opening on August 16. A special feature in which both Alvarez and Scott discuss the original sci-fi classic will be shown as a part of your theater admission. Take a look at the preview of that conversation below.

Fede Alvarez and Ridley Scott

Back in 1979, the original trailer for Alien was kind of terrifying. Imagine sitting in front of a CRT TV (Cathode Ray Tube) at night and suddenly Jerry Goldsmith’s haunting score begins to play as a giant chicken egg starts to crack with beams of light bursting through the shell and the word “Alien” slowly forms in slanted all caps across the screen. To a twelve-year-old, it was a scary pre-bedtime experience, especially Goldsmith’s screaming electronic musical flourishes playing over scenes of the actual movie. Let the “Is it horror or sci-fi?” debate begin.

Alien became a pop culture phenomenon, complete with kid’s toys, a graphic novel, and an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. It also inspired dioramas in wax museums and even a frightening setpiece at Walt Disney World in the now-defunct Great Movie Ride attraction.

Great Movie Ride

The film stars Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, and John Hurt. It tells the tale of a futuristic crew of blue-collar workers suddenly awakened out of stasis to investigate an undecipherable distress signal coming from a nearby moon. They investigate the source of the signal and discover it’s a warning and not a cry for help. Unbeknownst to the crew, they have brought a giant space creature back on board which they find out in one of the most iconic scenes in cinema history.

It is said that Alvarez’s sequel will pay homage to the original film’s storytelling and set design.
