It was announced today that the Tom Hanks 1989 comedy/horror movie The Burbs is being rebooted and going straight to Peacock as a series. This time it stars Keke Palmer (Nope, Password), who will also executive produce.
Furthermore, Ted and Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane will executive produce. Dana Olsen, the writer of the 1989 film, will serve as co-executive producer on the series.
Upon its release, it was severely panned by critics but has since become a cult classic. Director Joe Dante has said, “It made a lot of money, it was fairly popular, but the reviews were abominably bad. And we sort of all figured, ‘Well, we’ll just go onto the next thing.’ And then over the years, I’d go to dentist’s offices and stuff and they’d say, ‘Oh, you made The ‘Burbs?’ And I discovered the picture was more popular than I thought it was. And now the movie is probably second only to Gremlins as the most popular movie I ever made.”
Peacock provided the synopsis for the new series in a press release: “Set in present-day suburbia, The ‘Burbs follows a young couple returning to the husband’s childhood home. Their world is upended when new neighbors move in next door, bringing old secrets of the cul-de-sac to light, and new deadly threats shatter the illusion of their quiet little neighborhood.”
The series will film in Los Angeles at the same location as the original 1989 film, the backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood.
No word yet on when the series will hit Peacock.
