The insane smash-hit Steam game is being adapted into a feature film by Jeremiah Kipp. DarkStone Digital’s The Mortuary Assistant has been a bit of a phenomenon with a huge amount of jump scares and an ominous atmosphere and story. The entire thing is perfect for a film adaptation. In fact, if you have seen a film called The Autopsy of Jane Doe you would see that it sort of influenced The Mortuary Assistant and is also terrifying.
The synopsis for The Mortuary Assistant goes like this:
“Mortician Rebecca Owens thinks her first night on the job will be embalming a surplus of corpses, but she soon learns a sinister presence resides at River Fields Mortuary.“
The game follows you as you attempt to embalm and process three corpses on late night in the mortuary office. The game tasks you with performing the individual steps of the embalming process. All the bells and whistles like wiring the jaw shut, draining the body and everything else that is on the checklist. As you progress, you start to realize demons and spirits gathering and popping up out of nowhere to scare the hell out of you.
It soon becomes apparent that one of the three bodies is possessed. It is up to you to choose one of them and dispose of them properly. You have to pay attention to clues like marks on the bodies and other strange occurrences. It is a terrifying experience.
There’s a quiet, unnerving intensity to The Mortuary Assistant that creeps into the player, creating a sense that something terrible could happen at any moment.” Kipp commented on The Mortuary Assistant’s adaptation. “Writing the adaptation, I wanted to celebrate all of the game that terrified me as well as create a companion piece to it – honoring the dense creepy world developer Brian Clarke (DarkStone Digital) made and translating it into the visual storytelling and character-driven horror of narrative filmmaking. I want to retain the minimalist setting in and around the mortuary, the fascination with the process of embalming, and the nerve-shredding terror of the gameplay. Rebecca Owens is a fascinating character, vulnerable because of a traumatic past and committed in her self-reliance. It has been a truly crazy ride living in Brian’s twisted world, and that’s the experience we want to give the viewer.”
The Mortuary Assistant will make for a great horror movie and if you haven’t yet seen The Autopsy of Jane Doe you might want to check that film out as well.
