What was it—I paused to think—what was it that so unnerved me in the contemplation of the House of Usher?
Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) is one of the best horror directors of this generation. He has directed some of the best triple-A films and horror miniseries that we have experienced in the past decade. With The Fall of the House of Usher, Mike Flanagan shows us once again that he just can’t miss.
Currently sitting at a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, 10/10 on IGN, and 4/5 on IGN, this may be his best work yet. With most of the reviews now in, it’s easy to see why the miniseries is performing so well.
The reviews cite two important themes as the key to the success of the series. Firstly, is the aspect of the broken family dynamic. Entertainment Weekly puts it very clearly in their review, stating that this miniseries is ” Succession meets Edgar Allan Poe fan fiction.”
This brings us to the other main draw of this series, its usage of the works of Edgar Allan Poe (The Raven). Mike Flanagan’s works are often inspired by classic literature. But The Fall of the House of Usher is a mash up of all the things we have come to love about Edgar Allen Poe and his dark and brooding works.
The Fall of the House of Usher premiers on October 12th, 2023, exclusively on Netflix. If Mike Flanagan’s reputation and an overwhelmingly positive review score stand to reason, then we should all be glued to our couch for ten hours next week.
