The real Annabelle doll has emerged from her glass box to go on a cross country road trip. It’s called ‘Devils on the Run’ tour and the supposed demonic doll has already made a few stops.
Most people might know Annabelle from the Conjuring universe made famous by director James Wan. She was introduced in The Conjuring, had a cameo in its sequel and got three of her own spinoffs.
Even though the movies portray her as a ghoulish faced Victorian porcelain doll with cracked marble eyes, the real one is actually less threatening.
Annabelle is a rag doll, specifically a Raggedy Ann doll. Her cloth body is stuffed with batting, her hair made of yarn with a stitched face sown into an unthreatening smile. The real Annabelle was confiscated in the early 70s by demonologists Ed and Lorraine after they investigated a case in which two roommates reported weird activities in their apartment after receiving the toy as a gift.
The Warrens determined that Annabelle was being manipulated by a demon who used it to walk around the house and leave notes. The investigators put Annabelle in a glass case in their cursed item storeroom with a sign that reads “Warning, positively, do not open.”
The Devils on the Run tour started earlier this month and brought the infamous plush villain out of the cellar and into the public at mostly popular occult events such as the West Virginia State Penitentiary and the Psychic & Spirit Fest in San Antonio.
The tour is being sponsored by the New England Society for Psychic Research (NESPR). It’s scheduled to continue through the summer, stopping in states such as Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky.
While some fans are eager to meet the monotonous paranormal star, others are more cautious, like this Catholic demonologist.
“You don’t treat something like Annabelle as a novelty,” he told a Texas news station. “If you believe in its history, you understand the risks. If you don’t, then you’re provoking something you don’t respect.”
