Brad Anderson hasn’t really delved into big-screen horror movie projects since his favorite-among-horror fans slow-burn Session 9 back in 2001. He has been steady in directing dramas and thrillers (The Machinist, Fractured), but his primary focus has been on television shows.
However next year the United States and UK are getting Anderson’s latest full-length horror motion picture called Blood, being distributed by Vertical Entertainment.
The entertainment publication JoBlo broke down the plot:
“Jess, a nurse and mother recently separated from her husband, who moves with her daughter Tyler and young son Owen back into her old farmhouse. Shortly after settling in, Owen’s dog escapes into the woods and returns days later, blood-soaked and rabid. When he attacks and bites Owen, the resulting infection from the bite grows more alarming by the day as Owen’s behavior becomes frightening and deadly. As he spirals deeper into the depths of the illness, Jess discovers a disturbing cure, which makes her question how far she is willing to go to keep her child alive.”
The movie will also star Skeet Ulrich, Skylar Morgan Jones, and Finlay Wojtak-Hissong.
Session 9 wasn’t a box office hit, but it became a rental favorite 20 years ago. Anderson has a knack for capturing an eerie moodiness that permeates throughout the film. If A24 had existed back then, Session 9 would have been a perfect fit. .
Currently, Session 9 sits at an IMDb rating of 6.4 and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 66%. The Letterboxd average sits a 3.2 overall out of 5.
The film also got a big boost from its star power. David Caruso, who plays Phil in the movie, was at the height of his career starring in the hugely successful CSI: Miami at the time. Remember the meme of him dramatically taking off his sunglasses?
Blood looks to be just as eerie as Session 9, but with a lot more…blood. This is exciting news among horror fans who have wanted to see more full-length features with a creepy edge from Anderson. Blood will be available in U.S. and UK theaters starting January 27 with VOD dropping on January 31.
