Although YouTuber Paul Davis says his mind is “still boggled” about how he came into possession (snicker) of these never-before-seen outtakes of The Exorcist — and he is not revealing his sources — it is some of the best archival footage of the film to come around in decades.
The video announcement was revealed yesterday but strangely it was taken down for a while. It was finally available for viewing today and below is the 35-minute reel. Most of the footage is silent, but Davis gives a play-by-play through those scenes with his best guess on what is happening and why it wasn’t used.
He admits that some of the lost scenes have been seen on YouTube before, but “the Pazuzu makeup and the alternate Karras and Merrin dialogue and Kinderman and Dyer ending haven’t been seen on any of the DVD/Blu-Ray releases.”
The Exorcist is considered by many to be the best horror movie ever made. It works because some of the movie magic is so well done that it almost seems real. So if you don’t want your suspension of disbelief ruined it might be best to avoid the following video. But if you’re curious about how it all came together behind the scenes press play and enjoy.
