Ryan Murphy’s new true crime mini-series The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story hasn’t even hit Netflix yet, but the producer/director has already cast his lead for season three, and this time he is tackling one of the most notorious serial killers of all time.

Ed Gein will be the topic of Monsters’ third season and Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, Rebel Moon) will play him.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story

Murphy’s first season of Monster was the highly acclaimed, Emmy-winning The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. It was a disturbing 10-episode of Dahmer’s life and crimes up until he was murdered in prison in 1994.

Gein, or The Butcher of Plainfield as he was nicknamed, was only convicted of one murder although he confessed to two. It was never confirmed how many people he actually killed, but he was suspected of many beyond what he admitted to. Beyond that, Gein led a macabre life. He would collect bones and human remains from graves and use them as makeshift furnishings for his home.

This inspired many horror movies and written works, most notably The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 1974. Robert Bloch wrote his novel Psycho inspired by Gein and later in 1988 Thomas Harris penned The Silence of the Lambs in which his main antagonist Buffalo Bill was inspired by Gein.

There is no word yet on when the new mini-series will start filming. But The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story will stream starting September 19 on Netflix.
