Boomschtick: Review of Ash vs Evil Dead S02E01 — “Home”

Published

on

“I’ve made a huge mess.”

Ten months after Ash (Bruce Campbell) and Ruby (Lucy Lawless) made a pact for the Ghostbeaters to lay down their weapons and head back to their lives, the author of the Necronomicon admits that she has lost control of her “children” and needs Ash and his cohorts to help her send them back to hell.

The first few minutes from “Ash vs Evil Dead’s” Season 2 premiere came locked and loaded. Of course, the splatstick fare of blood, guts and one-liners are abundant, but we also learn a bit more about Ruby and why Ash and the group need to head back to The King’s hometown. In short, the story lines which will drive the second set of ten episodes have already been revealed, now we just enjoy the ride.

With that in mind, if you haven’t seen “Home,” we suggest you turn around and head back because there will be spoilers.

What interested me most about the premiere was not about new characters or even the dynamic between Ash and the suddenly desperate Ruby, but rather that the show took time to focus on Pablo (Ray Santiago) and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo). You’ll recall that the truce agreed upon from Season 1 had nothing to do with the thoughts or feelings of Ash’s minions, nor was living it up in Jacksonville, because while Ash was partying, Pablo and Kelly were busing tables and tending bar, respectively.

The tandem aren’t quite resentful, but certainly frustrated. You picking up on the theme, because it doesn’t appear to have been lost on the Deadites?

Possession notwithstanding, Ash’s sidekicks had evil come at them in a rather straightforward manner throughout the first season. The tandem didn’t have to endure the Deadite mind-fucks Ash had at the cabin back in the day (or even last season), but it certainly seems that the Evil Dead universe will continue to expand with meatier plots involving the Boomstick Butcher’s left and right hands (forgive the pun). Both get their craniums toyed with in hopes of planting seeds of mutiny, and we all know that Kelly has a far shorter distance to travel than Pablo when it comes to that particular road.

ghostbeatersWhile we didn’t get to see Ted Raimi in the opener, we do get a glimpse of the Kandarian Dagger, a taunting chant we may have heard before and the Six Million Dollar Man. Let’s just say that if you had any lingering doubt whether Lee Majors would adapt to the genre, fret no more because he was bloody seamless as Ash’s father, Brock. DeLorenzo told iHorror that no one could deliver a one-liner better than Campbell — unless they were Majors — and she was right. Pops is quick on the trigger and with biting words, thinks Pablo is an illegal and isn’t exactly keen on his son’s return. Not that he’s alone. No one in Elk Grove wants Ashy Slashy there.

So they embarked on a quest to find Ruby and it didn’t take them long to do just that, which symbolized the final bricks of a foundation that will carry us through Season 2.

We’d be remiss if we neglected some fantastic references from the season debut before moving on to questions heading into Episode 2.

We had learned that the events surrounding Army of Darkness were fair game this year, and the show doesn’t waste time alluding to the third film of the Evil Dead trilogy. You’ll know it when you hear it because there are a couple of not-so subtle moments that will make that huge grin you’re already sporting nearly rip your face off.

On the subtle (and excessively excited) side, though, I am convinced there was a nod to The ‘Burbs in the season premiere. I don’t want to spoil it by saying anything more, but just know that it is there and it will elicit a “God, I love this street show!”

Season 2 looks to up the ante from character development to buckets of blood and even the baddest villain in Evil Dead history that Ms. DeLorenzo had told us about. However, there are questions:

  • For all his bluster and bravado, why did Ash tuck tail and run 30 years ago rather than explain what really happened at the cabin?
  • Why didn’t his father believe his son when he told him that he did not murder Cheryl or his friends?
  • What is Ruby’s end game? We know she needs Ash’s help now, but when will she once again assume the upper hand?
  • What else can the Necronomicon do that we aren’t aware of?
  • Is Pablo assuming Cheryl’s role? What’s with the waking nightmare visions and doodling?
  • And you know the Deadites are merely using Kelly’s subconscious against her. When will she lash out and take things in her own direction?

Look, “Ash vs Evil Dead” is a show that can be enjoyed at face value, but it’s just far more fun to dig a little deeper in anticipation of what’s to come. Let’s not forget, Ruby fought alongside Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan, but our favorite “dipshit” is her Obi-Wan.

If that’s not a reason to come back every week, we don’t know what else we can do for you.

Catch you on the flip-flop.

‘Evil Dead’ Film Franchise Getting TWO New Installments

Published

on

It was a risk for Fede Alvarez to reboot Sam Raimi’s horror classic The Evil Dead in 2013, but that risk paid off and so did its spiritual sequel Evil Dead Rise in 2023. Now Deadline is reporting that the series is getting, not one, but two fresh entries.

We already knew about the Sébastien Vaniček upcoming film that delves into the Deadite universe and should be a proper sequel to the latest film, but we are broadsided that Francis Galluppi and Ghost House Pictures are doing a one-off project set in Raimi’s universe based off of an idea that Galluppi pitched to Raimi himself. That concept is being kept under wraps.

Evil Dead Rise

“Francis Galluppi is a storyteller who knows when to keep us waiting in simmering tension and when to hit us with explosive violence,” Raimi told Deadline. “He is a director that shows uncommon control in his feature debut.”

That feature is titled The Last Stop In Yuma County which will release theatrically in the United States on May 4. It follows a traveling salesman, “stranded at a rural Arizona rest stop,” and “is thrust into a dire hostage situation by the arrival of two bank robbers with no qualms about using cruelty-or cold, hard steel-to protect their bloodstained fortune.”

Galluppi is an award-winning sci-fi/horror shorts director whose acclaimed works include High Desert Hell and The Gemini Project. You can view the full edit of High Desert Hell and the teaser for Gemini below:

‘Invisible Man 2’ Is “Closer Than Its Ever Been” to Happening

Published

on

Elisabeth Moss in a very well-thought-out statement said in an interview for Happy Sad Confused that even though there have been some logistical issues for doing Invisible Man 2 there is hope on the horizon.

Podcast host Josh Horowitz asked about the follow-up and if Moss and director Leigh Whannell were any closer to cracking a solution to getting it made. “We are closer than we have ever been to cracking it,” said Moss with a huge grin. You can see her reaction at the 35:52 mark in the below video.

Happy Sad Confused

Whannell is currently in New Zealand filming another monster movie for Universal, Wolf Man, which might be the spark that ignites Universal’s troubled Dark Universe concept which hasn’t gained any momentum since Tom Cruise’s failed attempt at resurrecting The Mummy.

Also, in the podcast video, Moss says she is not in the Wolf Man film so any speculation that it’s a crossover project is left in the air.

Meanwhile, Universal Studios is in the middle of constructing a year-round haunt house in Las Vegas which will showcase some of their classic cinematic monsters. Depending on attendance, this could be the boost the studio needs to get audiences interested in their creature IPs once more and to get more films made based on them.

The Las Vegas project is set to open in 2025, coinciding with their new proper theme park in Orlando called Epic Universe.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s Thriller ‘Presumed Innocent’ Series Gets Early Release Date

Published

on

Jake gyllenhaal presumed innocent

Jake Gyllenhaal’s limited series Presumed Innocent is dropping on AppleTV+ on June 12 instead of June 14 as originally planned. The star, whose Road House reboot has brought mixed reviews on Amazon Prime, is embracing the small screen for the first time since his appearance on Homicide: Life on the Street in 1994.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s in ‘Presumed Innocent’

Presumed Innocent is being produced by David E. Kelley, J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, and Warner Bros. It is an adaptation of Scott Turow’s 1990 film in which Harrison Ford plays a lawyer doing double duty as an investigator looking for the murderer of his colleague.

These types of sexy thrillers were popular in the ’90s and usually contained twist endings. Here’s the trailer for the original:

According to Deadline, Presumed Innocent doesn’t stray far from the source material: “…the Presumed Innocent series will explore obsession, sex, politics and the power and limits of love as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together.”

Up next for Gyllenhaal is the Guy Ritchie action movie titled In the Grey scheduled for release in January 2025.

Presumed Innocent is an eight-episode limited series set to stream on AppleTV+ starting June 12.
