It’s ironic that a rumor about a potential all-female version of Fight Club (1999) essentially breaks the first rule of Fight Club, but, as we know, the internet spoils everything.
It’s been 25 years since Tyler Durden made a “man” out of the timid Edward Norton in Fight Club, and in movie years, and in accordance with Hollywood philosophy, it’s ripe for a reboot or remake.
An image from a recent post from DiscussingFilm started the internet abuzz about Greta Gerwig helming an all-female reboot of the action classic. We weren’t able to find the original post (allegedly sourced by Deadline), but there is a screenshot of it which might be fake. Either way, it got people talking. Is it all true? Or, as Nukes Top 5 would say, “is it all an elaborate hoax?”
Looks like the latter. First, Fox technically no longer exists since Disney took over and uses the 20th Century Studios banner on their production cards.
Furthermore, there is no article on Deadline about the reboot and we can’t find the original post made on DiscussingFilm. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that both publications made a mistake and redacted their stories. But that seems unlikely. Very unlikely.
According to the post, Charlize Theron and Margot Robbie are allegedly starring in the film which is the first hint of fabrication since both stars are currently working on several big projects, none of which include a Fight Club reboot.
As for Gerwig, she currently has her hands full with an upcoming Narnia reboot and another Netflix project starring George Clooney and Adam Sandler.
An all-female Fight Club would be an interesting take on the Dave Fincher classic, but with toxic fandom still raging on about “woke” culture and breaking canon, an announcement like this is probably just some form of bad rage-baiting.
