If you thought 2024 was the year of the original indie, then we’re calling 2025 the year of legacy sequel. Some of these films in pre and post-production have characters and plots that have been in our lives for several decades and they are finally returning to the big screen. This year there were only a few of them: Alien: Romulus, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and The First Omen.

Get ready for 2025 though as the legacy franchise sequel is looking to dominate the box office. There are so many, we can’t decide which one we are most excited about. Wait, yes we can: 28 Years Later. However, that doesn’t mean the others are any less important – we are finally getting a Final Destination movie 14 years after the last one. Can you believe the original is 24 years old? R.I.P Tony Todd.

This year, canon starters such as Longlegs, Strange Darling, Cuckoo, The Substance, In a Violent Nature, Immaculate, and Azrael all had great runs and we hope those filmmakers continue to bring us more. We aren’t going to discount the history-making Terrifier 3, but give that a decade before it really becomes a legacy.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (July 18)
