Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale are set to appear in The Watcher, a limited series at Netflix under the watchful eyes of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan.
Based on the mysterious Watcher case which shot to fame in 2014, the series follows a couple who purchased a New Jersey home only to begin receiving letters from a mysterious person signed The Watcher during renovations. The stranger claimed to have inherited his duties from his father who took them over from his grandfather.
“657 Boulevard has been the subject of my family for decades now and as it approaches its 110th birthday, I have been put in charge of watching and waiting for its second coming,” one of the letters from The Watcher reportedly said. “My grandfather watched the house in the 1920s and my father watched in the 1960s. It is now my time.”
“Will the young blood play in the basement?” a separate letter read. “Or are they too afraid to go down there alone. I would [be] very afraid if I were them. It is far away from the rest of the house. If you were upstairs you would never hear them scream.”
The couple believed “young blood” referred to their children, and ultimately decided not to move into the house. They sold it at a loss of almost half a million dollars a few years later.
In 2018, Netflix secured the rights to the Watcher story for an undisclosed amount in the seven-figure range according to Deadline. It was originally meant to be a feature and has only recently morphed into a limited series.
