The talk of the horror movie community over the past few weeks has been Chris Nash’s In a Violent Nature, the slasher movie being called “arthouse.” Although the director’s cinematic approach feels different when all is said and done, this is still a slasher movie arthouse or not. In this minute-and-a-half extended clip, you can see why.
The scene is a bit trope-ish in modern filmmaking; the killer finding his signature mask. We have seen Michael do it, we have seen Jason do it and even that guy in My Bloody Valentine do it. But what those movies had that In a Violent Nature doesn’t is a tension-inducing traditional score. Nash’s movie is all about ambient sound. Some people even go so far as to call it the world’s first “ASMR horror movie.”
While watching this, you will probably notice that the practical effects don’t appear as wonderful as everyone has said they are, but this is probably the only bad example in the movie. The kills are spectacular and there are a few you have to see to believe.
In the end, this scene represents the sound design that makes In a Violent Nature so different from others of its kind. It also shows how the audience experiences the killer throughout the film from a third-person point of view.
