There is a certain nostalgia among Gen Xers for the ’90s grim comedy Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitters Dead. Now the latest generation is getting a remake and you can watch the teaser below.
This modern version stars Nicole Richie, Simone Joy Jones, and June Squibb. Olympian freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy will also star. Bloody Disgusting reports that the film will have an R rating for “teen drug use, language, and some sexual references.”
This updated version follows the original plot, with high school graduate Tanya wanting to go to Europe with her friends but is denied after her mother leaves the country herself to attend to her mental health. Things get progressively worse when the babysitter arrives, and then dies leaving Tanya to take care of her family by herself forgoing any summer fun.
This reboot will be released theatrically starting April 12 then stream on BET+ in the future.
Christina Applegate starred in the 1991 version with Stephen Herek directing. Since its release the film has become a cult favorite and essentially made Applegate a movie star, crossing over into film three years into her successful role as Kelly Bundy on the irreverent sitcom Married…With Children.
Tyra Banks and her company SMiZE Productions get executive producer credit for the remake.
