David Cronenberg’s 1988 Dead Ringers is being rebooted. This time for series at Amazon with Rachel Weisz playing the brilliant and ultimately sadistic twins.

The original film starred Jeremy Irons played twin surgeons, who are eventually driven mad by ego, jealous, love and drugs. It’s one of Cronenberg’s best as well as one of Irons best roles.

The Amazon reboot for Dead Ringers is as follows:

In Dead Ringers, written by Birch, The Mantle twins, played by Weisz, are the most successful, brilliant and extraordinary people you’ve never met. Identical from head to toe, these two OB-gyn’s are on a mission to change the way women birth, starting with Manhattan. Drugs, pioneering but very much illegal medical research, sex and falling in love, this drama based on the David Cronenberg 80’s cult classic, takes us to darker and stranger territory than we could have possibly imagined.

It is said to have a different tone [from the original] and explore themes like women’s health and the issues it faces, including under-funding, as it focuses on the two professional women, the Mantle twins, who are excellent at their jobs while also trying to navigate life outside of work.

Weisz is a fantastic actress. She always brings something new to the roles she plays, so I’m sure she will do great. Plus, the original material by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland’s book did explore elements that Cronenberg’s run time wasn’t able to explore.

Weisz, Alice Birch, Annapurna Television, and Morgan Creek Entertainment are behind the series’ production.
