Tim Burton’s Batman Returns is arguably one of the best Batman films around. It’s also one of the strangest ones. If you recall, Danny DeVito played The Penguin and the guy made the role his very own. He saturated the role so thoroughly that it is now impossible to think of anyone else playing Burton’s Penguin. He became Oswald Cobblepot and it was phenomenal and… gross. DeVito has now expressed interest in returning to the cold little murdery flippers of The Penguin.
“I feel like it’s not out of the question that The Penguin will return someday, but this is all up to Tim, whether or not Tim wants to do this.” DeVito told Frobes, “I would say that could be in the cards because we ain’t dead yet. We could do a continuation of what we had in the past because that was truly a brilliant movie. They afforded me that opportunity and I feel very grateful and would I like to revisit it? Why not! It was a really great moment in time for me.”
Matt Reeves’ The Batman is on its way to theaters next year, and in it we will see an Al Capone type of gangster in the capable hands of Colin Farrell. Of course, this version of the caped crusader is vastly different from Burton’s gothic world in his double Batman feature in 1989 and 1992.
Don’t give up hope though, y’all. Never say never. Especially these days. The next Flash film is set to loosely be set around the events of the Flashpoin arc. This one will shatter the world of the logical and have parallel universes colliding. In fact, we already know that Micheal Keaton’s Batman will be crossing over into The Flash’s world. Knowing that bit of info, it’s a smart move, with perfect timing for DeVito to confess interest in returning to the popular role. If Keaton is headed back to the Batcave, it’s possible that Cobblepot and his army of rocket penguin’s aren’t far off either.
