Probably not on the scale of the expensive Disney live-action movie, but Belle does have an interesting premise. They are calling it a “horror fantasy” retelling of the Beauty and the Beast fairytale classic.
“Belle would do anything to save her ailing father so she journeys in search of a mythical rose believed to be a cure. As payment for the rose, Belle must surrender herself to a vicious beast and battle his spell.”
There has been a fairytale revival of sorts in the horror community. Winnie the Pooh and The Grinch got a slasher cover with more adaptations of different children’s stories still on the way.
Belle doesn’t look like a slasher per the trailer, but they aren’t revealing too much in it either. It would be cool if the Beast went on a rampage and tore up all the villagers with unique kills, or Belle used an axe to finally shut Gaston up while singing, “No one bleeds like Gaston,” but don’t hold your breath.
Belle, written and directed by Max Gold (“Surfer’s Paradise,” “Silicon Beach,” “Classic of Changes”) will be released in select theaters on July 14 and On Demand, August 22.
