Director, Alex Garland’s films have always had an edge. One of those sharp edges that feels like it is a place that we are headed as a society. His latest film absolutely feels like a piece of work that feels like a place society has already seen a preview of in the last couple of years. It feels a little too familiar and with that familiarity comes the terror. The first trailer for Civil War looks like Garland’s most grandiose and horrifying yet.
Civil War imagines a United States that has been ultimately divided into a warzone with a flag that only has 2 stars. 19 states have seceded and a western front of fighters are moving from the west to take over the capitol. We follow Kirsten Dunst and her crew of Journalists who are watching the entire thing unfold from coast to terrifying coast.
Moments in the trailer that stand out are the chilling moment with Jesse Plemmons holding a group at gunpoint asking what “kind” of American they are. Plemmons has always had a chilling knack for being really hard to read. That is what makes his work so compelling.
