The Horror Coming to Cinemas Near You– June 2015

Published

on

While we cannot say that June 2015 will be a blockbuster month for horror movies coming to cinemas, thankfully we do have a few films horror fans can head out to see:

June 2:

Private Number

Looking for more of a mystery/thriller, horror movie?  Then check out LazRael Lison’s (Rift) upcoming film Private Number.  The story focuses on author Michael Lane (Hal Ozsan- Helter Skelter), a recovering alcoholic who is being tormented by a series of cryptic phone messages and visions that pull him away from reality and toward an obsession with an horrific series of murders.

Check out the trailer here:

Again, while it may not be a pure, out-an-out horror movie, it may be worth a look if you are wanting something with a bit more of a dramatic edge to it, or feel like trying to put all of the clues together and solve the mystery before the filmmakers hand you the answers. Plus, you get to enjoy Judd Nelson as a Sheriff while we wait for…

June 5:

Insidious: Chapter 3

For the next installment of the Insidious franchise, we get a prequel set before the haunting of the Lambert family that focuses on how Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) reluctantly agrees to use her psychic abilities to help a teenage girl (Stefanie Scott- A.N.T. Farm) deal with a dangerous supernatural entity, as we originally told you about here.

With the story being set before the haunting of the Lamberts, Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne do not reprise their roles from the first two Insidious films, nor does Director James Wan return, as he was tied up with the filming of Furious Seven, instead handing the reins over to writer Leigh Whannell (Saw, Inisdious) for his directorial debut. Leigh Whannell (Specs), Lin Shaye (Elise Rainier) and Angus Sampson (Tucker) do all reprise their roles from the previous films, so some continuity is maintained, and the style does feel very similar to the first two films, which should please Insidious fans.

Insidious Chapter Three is the most ‘pure’ horror film to come out in June 2015, so mark this date on your calendar horror fans.

June 12:

Jurassic World

While it is a probably a stretch to call Jurassic World a horror film, the fourth installment in the sci-fi, adventure series is just too ‘magical‘ to not talk about.

Set twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park, John Hammond’s dream of a dinosaur theme park on Isla Nublar are alive thanks to the Masrani Global Corporation.  Now, because the public are somehow bored with seeing dinosaurs, because they are spoiled jerks,  Masrani tasks their staff, led by operations manager Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard- The Village) to genetically engineer a new hybrid, super dinosaur to try and draw people in. Obviously this new dinosaur escapes and wreaks havoc on the park, and it is up to Jurassic World’s velociraptor trainer Owen Grady (Chris Pratt- Guardians of the Galaxy) and the security team to try and stop it.

Here is the latest U.S. trailer:

It seems like almost all Jurassic fans are of two minds on the upcoming film:

1) They are excited, because it is a new Jurassic film, where we actually get to see a fully functioning Jurassic Park (now called Jurassic World, as I am sure ‘Park’ made it sound too much like a place where you go hiking for the average tourist).

2) They saw Jurassic Park 3 and are being careful not to get their expectations too high; you know, because….Jurassic Park 3.

Fingers crossed.

June 19:

Burying the Ex

Coming to both V.O.D. and a limited release is Joe Dante’s (Gremlins, The Burbs) latest horror comedy, which we originally told you about here.

Burying the Ex follows Max (Anton Yelchin- Star Trek, Fright Night) who is having trouble getting the nerve up to break up with his over-bearing girlfriend Evelyn (Ashley Greene- Twilight), but when she is killed in a freak accident, he is able to move on with his life and falls for Olivia (Alexandra Daddario- Texas Chainsaw 3D).

Problem is, Evelyn rises from the grave, and technically, Max and her never broke up…

Check out the trailer here:

Most comedy-horror fans only had to see the name ‘Joe Dante’ attached to this project to be excited, but even if that did nothing for you, the trailer should have at least piqued your interest to see what Dante has done with another weird, fun story, and with a pretty stellar cast.

There you have it, an interesting spread of horror films coming in June 2015.  While there are not many true horror films coming to cinemas, there is a good variety for anyone looking to get a thrill this month.

Happy Horror!

Netflix Releases First BTS ‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ Footage

Published

on

It’s been three long years since Netflix unleashed the bloody, but enjoyable Fear Street on its platform. Released in a tryptic fashion, the streamer broke up the story into three episodes, each taking place in a different decade which by the finale were all tied together.

Now, the streamer is in production for its sequel Fear Street: Prom Queen which brings the story into the 80s. Netflix gives a synopsis of what to expect from Prom Queen on their blog site Tudum:

“Welcome back to Shadyside. In this next installment of the blood-soaked Fear Street franchise, prom season at Shadyside High is underway and the school’s wolfpack of It Girls is busy with its usual sweet and vicious campaigns for the crown. But when a gutsy outsider is unexpectedly nominated to the court, and the other girls start mysteriously disappearing, the class of ’88 is suddenly in for one hell of a prom night.”

Based on R.L. Stine’s massive series of Fear Street novels and spin-offs, this chapter is number 15 in the series and was published in 1992.

Fear Street: Prom Queen features a killer ensemble cast, including India Fowler (The Nevers, Insomnia), Suzanna Son (Red Rocket, The Idol), Fina Strazza (Paper Girls, Above the Shadows), David Iacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty, Cinnamon), Ella Rubin (The Idea of You), Chris Klein (Sweet Magnolias, American Pie), Lili Taylor (Outer Range, Manhunt) and Katherine Waterston (The End We Start From, Perry Mason).

No word on when Netflix will drop the series into its catalog.

Live Action Scooby-Doo Reboot Series In Works at Netflix

Published

on

Scooby Doo Live Action Netflix

The ghosthunting Great Dane with an anxiety problem, Scooby-Doo, is getting a reboot and Netflix is picking up the tab. Variety is reporting that the iconic show is becoming an hour-long series for the streamer although no details have been confirmed. In fact, Netflix execs declined to comment.

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!

If the project is a go, this would be the first live-action movie based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon since 2018’s Daphne & Velma. Before that, there were two theatrical live-action movies, Scooby-Doo (2002) and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004), then two sequels that premiered on The Cartoon Network.

Currently, the adult-oriented Velma is streaming on Max.

Scooby-Doo originated in 1969 under the creative team Hanna-Barbera. The cartoon follows a group of teenagers who investigate supernatural happenings. Known as Mystery Inc., the crew consists of Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, and Shaggy Rogers, and his best friend, a talking dog named Scooby-Doo.

Scooby-Doo

Normally the episodes revealed the hauntings they encountered were hoaxes developed by land-owners or other nefarious characters hoping to scare people away from their properties. The original TV series named Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! ran from 1969 to 1986. It was so successful that movie stars and pop culture icons would make guest appearances as themselves in the series.

Celebrities such as Sonny & Cher, KISS, Don Knotts, and The Harlem Globetrotters made cameos as did Vincent Price who portrayed Vincent Van Ghoul in a few episodes.
