The Horror Coming to Cinemas Near You — March 2015

Published

on

With another Friday the 13th in March 2015, we thankfully get a good array of horror (and horror inspired) films coming to cinemas, in wide and limited release, and V.O.D.

March 6:

Buzzard

A different film for one of our cinema preview lists, Buzzard is less a horror movie as it is a dark comedy which centers around a horror-movie obsessed, small-time con man played by Joshua Burge (Ape, Coyote).  When his latest scheme goes awry he is forced to flee into the streets of Detroit with nothing but some stolen cheques and a very recognizable glove:

Called “Albert Camus meets Freddy Kruger…”, Buzzard comes to select theatres (and V.O.D.) riding some good festival buzz, and an interesting premise. Buzzard seems worth a look, even if it is just fun to to pick out all of the homages to our favorite horror movies as we watch Burges’ horror-metal slacker slowly self destruct (or just eat a whole lot of spaghetti).

March 13:

It Follows

The film follows Maika Monroe (The Guest) as 19 year old Jay, who after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, finds herself plagued by strange visions and an unavoidable feeling that something is following her, and it is up to her and her friends to find a way to escape:

Written and directed by David Robert Mitchell (The Myth of the American Sleepover), It Follows is being screened to rave reviews, including one from our own Trey Hilburn here after seeing the film at Fantastic Fest late last year. Visually interesting, and more reliant on atmosphere and a synthesizer rich soundtrack by video game composer Rich Vreeland and his band Disasterpiece, than special effects and jump scares, It Follows is a suspenseful, chilling film that should definitely be high on any horror lovers ‘to-watch’ list.

Muck

It would not be Friday the 13th without a little bit of Jason Voorhees, or in this case, Kane Hodder (Jason X) in Muck.  The film is about a group of friends who escape an ancient burial ground to find themselves trapped between two evils and are forced to fight or die:

Directed by newcomer Steve Wolsh, Muck is the first in what will be a trilogy of films, with Muck: Feast of Saint Patrick having already been funded via Kickstarter and entering pre-production in December of 2014. Muck looks to be a good ‘beer and pretzels’ sort of horror movie if it maintains that frenetic pace set in the above trailer.

We also told you about Muck here.

March 20:

Backcountry

IFC Midnight has an ‘inspired by real life’ film which takes a realistic look at survival horror in the Canadian wilderness in Backcountry:

Directed by Adam MacDonald (his feature film debut), Backcountry follows a young urban couple, played by Missy Peregrym (Reaper) and Jeff Roop (Vampire High), as they have an unsettling encounter with another hiker played by Eric Balfour (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003), they push deep into the woods, getting lost inside of bear territory.  Expect to have a strong desire to stay out of the woods after this one; you know, just in case you still went into the woods after every other horror movie.

The Walking Deceased

Are you ready for a film spoof of The Walking Dead?

[youtube id=”eEJzl3GX0P8″ align=”center” mode=”normal” autoplay=”no”]

The Walking Deceased follows in the footsteps of other films like Supernatural Activity or Scary Movie, in presenting a skewed look at a massively successful franchise and poking fun at other films within a specific genre (basically a film set up to be a series of referential jokes to other zombie films).  Starring Dave Sheridan (Scary Movie), it remains to be seen whether or not this film is a successful comedy, or gets mired down in its own material and collapses; spoof is a very difficult genre of comedy and tends to be completely hit or miss.

Zombeavers

Do we really have to say anything other than: Zombeavers?

[youtube id=”7onFrBK_hKE” align=”center” mode=”normal” autoplay=”no”]

I know: I’m excited too.

You can read John Squires talk about it here as well…Seriously, it is Zombeavers; what else do you need?

March 27:

Nightlight

Nightlight, from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (The Bride Wore Blood), is seen from a single point of view (a found footage style film), and is about a group of five teenagers who go out into the haunted Covington forest for a night of flashlight games (who didn’t?) and awaken a demonic force (again…):

[youtube id=”Z9vhGfYDatc” align=”center” mode=”normal” autoplay=”no”]

It remains to be seen whether this film is just another entry into the bloated ‘found footage/P.O.V.’ horror genre, or if it breaks new ground and becomes an interesting entry in the ‘kids in the woods with ghost/demons/evil’ horror pantheon.

There you have it, the horror films coming to cinemas (and V.O.D.) in March, plus a couple of extras in both Buzzard and The Walking Deceased.

Plus: Zombeavers!

Zombeavers

We are quite happy to say that there is literally something for everyone coming out in March 2015.

Happy Horror!

A24 Creating New Action Thriller “Onslaught” From ‘The Guest’ & ‘You’re Next’ Duo

Published

on

It’s always nice to see a reunion in the world of horror. Following a competitive bidding war, A24 has secured the rights to the new action thriller film Onslaught. Adam Wingard (Godzilla vs. Kong) will be directing the film. He will be joined by his longtime creative partner Simon Barret (You’re Next) as the scriptwriter.

For those unaware, Wingard and Barret made a name for themselves while working together on films such as You’re Next and The Guest. The two creatives are card carrying horror royalty. The pair have worked on films such as V/H/S, Blair Witch, The ABC’s of Death, and A Horrible Way to Die.

An exclusive article of out Deadline gives us the limited information we have on the topic. Although we don’t have much to go on, Deadline does offer the following information.

A24

“Plot details are being kept under wraps but the film is in the vein of Wingard and Barrett’s cult classics like The Guest and You’re Next. Lyrical Media and A24 will co-finance. A24 will handle worldwide releasing. Principal photography will begin in Fall 2024.”

A24 will be producing the film alongside Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett for Ryder Picture Company, Alexander Black for Lyrical Media, Wingard and Jeremy Platt for Breakaway Civilization, and Simon Barret.

That’s all the information we have at this time. Make sure to check back here for more news and updates.

Director Louis Leterrier Creating New Sci-Fi Horror Film “11817”

Published

on

Louis Leterrier

According to an article from Deadline, Louis Leterrier (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) is about to shake things up with his new Sci-Fi horror film 11817. Leterrier is set to produce and direct the new Movie. 11817 is penned by the glorious Mathew Robinson (The Invention of Lying).

Rocket Science will be taking the film to Cannes in search of a buyer. While we don’t know much about what the film looks like, Deadline offers the following plot synopsis.

“The film watches as inexplicable forces trap a family of four inside their house indefinitely. As both modern luxuries and life or death essentials begin to run out, the family must learn how to be resourceful to survive and outsmart who — or what — is keeping them trapped…”

“Directing projects where the audience gets behind the characters has always been my focus. However complex, flawed, heroic, we identify with them as we live through their journey,” said Leterrier. “It’s what excites me about 11817‘s wholly original concept and the family at the heart of our story. This is an experience that movie audiences won’t forget.”

Leterrier has made a name for himself in the past for working on beloved franchises. His portfolio includes gems such as Now You See Me, The Incredible Hulk, Clash of The Titans, and The Transporter. He is currently attached to create the final Fast and the Furious film. However, it will be interesting to see what Leterrier can do working with some darker subject material.

That’s all the information we have for you at this time. As always, make sure to check back here for more news and updates.
