The Lost Boys is a fun horror genre flick. Filled with vampires, an amazing cast, comedy, a saxophone man, amazing special fx makeup, and practical effects. It’s very true to the 80s style of movies at the time and is nostalgic and stylish. If you love a fun horror movie, this movie will not disappoint. Santa Carla isn’t a real town
The town in which the movie takes place isn’t a real place, but a fun fact is that it’s based on one. The town it’s based on is Santa Cruz. A good bit of the film is shot on the famous boardwalk in Santa Cruz, but the movie company had to come to an agreement with the city. They were allowed to shoot there if they changed the name of the city in the film. This was due to the references in the movie that it was the murder capital in the world. This makes sense since it’s a popular place for families to visit and something like that would be bad for business.
The Saxophone man was a professional musician
Dubbed the “Sexy Sax Man” by fans, this is an iconic scene in the movie. What’s interesting is that man is in fact, Timmy Cappello. He is a professional musician and performed with many famous artists in the 80s such as Peter Gabriel, Carly Simon, and Tina Turner whom he toured with for 15 years. His scene in the movie has had a great lasting impact on both his life and career.
The theme song “Cry Little Sister” became a hit
The theme song for the movie ended up becoming a hit. It landed at No. 15 spot on the Billboard 200 list and has been sampled by many famous artists. It was written by Gerard McMann and Michael Mainieri.
There was almost a sequel called The Lost Girls
The director Joel Schumacher says that he planned on making a sequel called The Lost Girls. The story would have followed a group of motorcycle girls that were vampires. Unfortunately, we never got to see this idea come to light as he tried for several years to make it happen. Instead, we ended up getting 2 straight to DVD sequels that came out in the late 2000s called The Lost Boys: The Tribe (2008) and The Lost Boys: The Thirst (2010) by different directors.
The vampire eye contacts were extremely painful
Back before there were soft contacts, they were made from glass. Wearing these were extremely painful, especially for long periods of time. It would cause dry eyes, burning, and itching which meant they would only have so many minutes to shoot a scene before the actors had to take a break and take them out. A fun fact is that the scene where David the head vampire sheds a tear is actor Kiefer Sutherland shedding a real tear because the contacts were burning his eyes. Thank goodness contacts have developed and progressed to being made from something other than glass.
