Five Horror Shops to Visit if You Attend Son of Monsterpalooza
Son of Monsterpalooza is starting up in just a few weeks, and what luck! It’s just in time to kick off the Halloween season in a big way! That’s right! The sequel to my absolute favorite convention gives horror fans plenty of reasons to plan a trip to L.A. And just in case you’re going to be in the area, I present to you a few of the finest must-stop horror shops and haunts for all your grizzly demands.
Son of Monsterpalooza (September 15-17, 2017)
It goes without saying, Monsterpalooza is incredible! So is its annual Fall sequel, Son of Monsterpalooza. It’s a perfect gathering for horror fiends to get their creepy fix – with plenty of guests to meet, shows to see, panels to experience and vendors to visit – there is never a dull moment and is well worth your money. It’s always a fun and friendly atmosphere and one you’ll want to break the piggy bank wide open for.
However, I recommend not spending your savings all at the convention. There are plenty of other places to explore before your stay is over!

Dark Delicacies.
This is a wonderful emporium for all your spooky needs. It’s one part book store (and provides the single-most impressive selection of rare horror literature I’ve ever seen), another part movie shop, and you can’t forget the section of the store that just simply showcases some of the finest horror collectables you’ll find this side of sanity.
Need some Halloween socks? Dark Del has you covered, my friend. What’s that? You don’t have enough horror shirts? Or you’re looking for a demonic tea set? This place has it all and is a definite must-stop requirement for all your Halloween planning.
Be sure to keep an eye on their upcoming events. The dark mastermind of this horror shop is always spinning his dark magic to bring in your favorite scary icons for store signings and autographs. And besides, just stop in. You never know who you might run into while you’re there.
You’ll certainly want to walk in with the intention to shop. You’ll be bewitched by what wonderment you’ll find inside. In one location you have a plethora of chilling needs. Jewelry for that special ghoul in your life. Magazines, posters, and did I mention signatures? You can find signed movies, books, and CD’s all right here. Everything is easy to find, too. I stress this is a must for Manic when I’m in town. And I’ve not even touched the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the selections within.

Creature Features
“CELEBRATING THE ART OF FANTASTIC CINEMA!”
And the sign does not lie. Through these doors awaits a world nearly forgotten. It’s the nostalgia shot we all need, a revisit back to times far simpler and gravely missed. This is Creature Features where all of our childhoods are perfectly persevered in museum-like perfection. That is if your childhood was anything like mine – fraught with Gremlins, monsters, giant apes, and Godzilla!
This place is a genuine blast to the past!
I always enter not knowing what I’ll find, but know I won’t be disappointed. And I never leave empty handed. One thing I love is to skim through the excellent selection of old monster/horror magazines I grew up with, and there’s one Hell of a selection to choose from here. I’ve added plenty of gory goodness to my thriving little library thanks to this wonderful establishment.
And honestly, where else can you find a cup of Godzilla Ramen noodles? I ask you, friends. There is NEVER a dull moment here.
What sticks out most to me is the wide – and I mean gaping wide – selection of rare and unique soundtracks you’ll find here. It’s the most impressive selection of horror classic scores you’ll ever see, and what perfect timing! Imagine playing Halloween 4’s soundtrack at your Halloween party! Or cruising down the road blaring Batman: The Animated Series!
And again, be on the lookout for signatures! This place is brimming with autographed CDs and Blu-rays.
Not content to just be a one-of-a-kind monster shop, Creature Features is it’s own incredible museum and supports different themes throughout the year. One year the theme was Alien, and show cased different artists’ take on the Ridley Scott horror masterpiece. Another masterpiece to be showcased was John Carpenter’s The Thing last Spring. Absolute quality and so worth the visit. This is a treasure trove for the horror fan. Again very friendly atmosphere and quite worth the trip.

Say, speaking of museums…
Bearded Lady Vintage Oddity Shop and the Mystic Museum
Perhaps not for the faint of heart, ladies and gents. However, should you be in the market for some truly one-of-a-kind type of art – something glamorously macabre – then this is your stop. Feel free to feast your eyes on the truly eccentric gloom contained herein. Taxidermy of bats, rats, and other darkly delightful beauties all need a home too, you know. And your house of nightmares simply can’t be complete without it. Hehehe.
Take for instance – The Alfred Hitchcock Rat! Wouldn’t he look dashing on your dining table? Or how about the the decorative deer antlers? I’m sure you have a spot on the wall for this grotesque display. And of course there is the real human skull that would make your Halloween decorum the talk of the town! You know your devilish curiosity has been tickled. So welcome to a little shop of playful horrors.
And while in town please be sure to visit the shop’s sister store across the street where you can explore the Mystic Museum. The last time I visited they were showcasing an Alfred Hitchcock and Twilight Zone theme.

‘Evil Dead’ Film Franchise Getting TWO New Installments
It was a risk for Fede Alvarez to reboot Sam Raimi’s horror classic The Evil Dead in 2013, but that risk paid off and so did its spiritual sequel Evil Dead Rise in 2023. Now Deadline is reporting that the series is getting, not one, but two fresh entries.
We already knew about the Sébastien Vaniček upcoming film that delves into the Deadite universe and should be a proper sequel to the latest film, but we are broadsided that Francis Galluppi and Ghost House Pictures are doing a one-off project set in Raimi’s universe based off of an idea that Galluppi pitched to Raimi himself. That concept is being kept under wraps.
“Francis Galluppi is a storyteller who knows when to keep us waiting in simmering tension and when to hit us with explosive violence,” Raimi told Deadline. “He is a director that shows uncommon control in his feature debut.”
That feature is titled The Last Stop In Yuma County which will release theatrically in the United States on May 4. It follows a traveling salesman, “stranded at a rural Arizona rest stop,” and “is thrust into a dire hostage situation by the arrival of two bank robbers with no qualms about using cruelty-or cold, hard steel-to protect their bloodstained fortune.”
Galluppi is an award-winning sci-fi/horror shorts director whose acclaimed works include High Desert Hell and The Gemini Project. You can view the full edit of High Desert Hell and the teaser for Gemini below:

‘Invisible Man 2’ Is “Closer Than Its Ever Been” to Happening
Elisabeth Moss in a very well-thought-out statement said in an interview for Happy Sad Confused that even though there have been some logistical issues for doing Invisible Man 2 there is hope on the horizon.
Podcast host Josh Horowitz asked about the follow-up and if Moss and director Leigh Whannell were any closer to cracking a solution to getting it made. “We are closer than we have ever been to cracking it,” said Moss with a huge grin. You can see her reaction at the 35:52 mark in the below video.
Whannell is currently in New Zealand filming another monster movie for Universal, Wolf Man, which might be the spark that ignites Universal’s troubled Dark Universe concept which hasn’t gained any momentum since Tom Cruise’s failed attempt at resurrecting The Mummy.
Also, in the podcast video, Moss says she is not in the Wolf Man film so any speculation that it’s a crossover project is left in the air.
Meanwhile, Universal Studios is in the middle of constructing a year-round haunt house in Las Vegas which will showcase some of their classic cinematic monsters. Depending on attendance, this could be the boost the studio needs to get audiences interested in their creature IPs once more and to get more films made based on them.
The Las Vegas project is set to open in 2025, coinciding with their new proper theme park in Orlando called Epic Universe.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s Thriller ‘Presumed Innocent’ Series Gets Early Release Date
Jake Gyllenhaal’s limited series Presumed Innocent is dropping on AppleTV+ on June 12 instead of June 14 as originally planned. The star, whose Road House reboot has brought mixed reviews on Amazon Prime, is embracing the small screen for the first time since his appearance on Homicide: Life on the Street in 1994.
Presumed Innocent is being produced by David E. Kelley, J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, and Warner Bros. It is an adaptation of Scott Turow’s 1990 film in which Harrison Ford plays a lawyer doing double duty as an investigator looking for the murderer of his colleague.
These types of sexy thrillers were popular in the ’90s and usually contained twist endings. Here’s the trailer for the original:
According to Deadline, Presumed Innocent doesn’t stray far from the source material: “…the Presumed Innocent series will explore obsession, sex, politics and the power and limits of love as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together.”
Up next for Gyllenhaal is the Guy Ritchie action movie titled In the Grey scheduled for release in January 2025.
Presumed Innocent is an eight-episode limited series set to stream on AppleTV+ starting June 12.
