7 Horror Movies Releasing Before Valentine’s Day 2024

Published

on

The year has barely started and we are already getting a slew of new horror titles — that’s an observation, not a complaint. But as much as people love horror movies, they also (hopefully) love their significant others, and if both of those things are in sync then there is no other month like February to celebrate them together.

Yes, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and along with it comes candy, flowers, and perhaps a night out on the town. But until then, you are in for a treat because we have sifted out seven upcoming titles to enjoy before the big day, starting with a doc on one of the greatest pulp horror movie directors of all time.

So whether you celebrate Valentine’s Day or not, get ready for two weeks of slashers, monsters and other nasty things. Here is a list of upcoming horror movies for the week of February 1 through February 14.

Dario Argento Panico (documentary) (Shudder Feb. 2)

Dario Argento Panico

Even in his eighties prolific director Dario Argento is keeping busy behind the camera. His most recent movie was 2022’s Dark Glasses. But most people know his prolific work from the ’70s. Taking a cue from director Mario Bava, Argento created some of the most revered Giallo movies to ever exist. From The Bird With the Crystal Plumage to Susperia to Demons, Argento’s oeuvre contains films that still influence the filmmakers of today.

Synopsis: Experience the world of Dario Argento like never before in Simone Scafidi’s documentary, Dario Argento Panico. It offers an intimate look at Argento’s creative journey and impact on horror, with insights from icons like del Toro and Noé.

Departing Seniors (VOD/PVOD Feb. 2)

Departing Seniors

If you’re slasher craving wasn’t satisfied with last month’s Founders Day, perhaps Departing Seniors will meet your needs. Billed as a horror-comedy, this one looks promising for a genre that is undeniably shop-worn.

Synopsis: Mexican-American and queer, high school student Javier doesn’t exactly fit in with the popular kids. But he might be the only one who can save them. After an act of bullying sends Javier to the hospital, he begins experiencing visions that foresee glimpses of shocking murders at his school right before they happen. Now, in between navigating the social hierarchies and prejudices of clique culture, Javier (Primo’s Ignacio Diaz-Silverio) and his best friend Bianca (Candyman’s Ireon Roach) must try to unmask a serial killer before he strikes again.

Departing Seniors puts a fresh spin on teen slasher movies like Scream and Freaky, updating them by putting its queer protagonist and characters of color front and center. It’s a horror-comedy with a sarcastic, whip-smart edge and appealingly complex characters.

Lisa Frankenstein (In theaters Feb. 9)

Lisa Frankenstein

Writer Diablo Cody is back with her brand of social commentary. This time the monster isn’t Megan Fox (Jennifer’s Body), but Cole Sprouse as a re-animated corpse. This is a highly anticipated film from director Zelda Williams (Jane the Virgin, Criminal Minds).

Synopsis: A coming of rage love story from acclaimed writer Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body) about a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse. After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way.

Out of Darkness (In theaters Feb. 9)

Out of Darkness

Monsters existed 45,000 years ago and Out of Darkness proves that point. This is what they call a “survival horror film” which is to say that several people are running from something big enough to block out the sun.

Synopsis: Out of Darkness is a survival horror film following a group of six who have struggled across the narrow sea to find a new home. They are starving, desperate, and living 45,000 years ago. First they must find shelter, and they strike out across the tundra wastes towards the distant mountains that promise the abundant caves they need to survive. But when night falls, anticipation turns to fear and doubt as they realize they are not alone. As relationships in the group fracture, the determination of one young woman reveals the terrible actions taken to survive. Adding to the film’s authenticity, Out of Darkness is shot on location in the Scottish Highlands with the use of a bespoke language called “Tola,” which was developed specifically for the project by a linguist and an archaeologist.

Skeletons in the Closet (Shudder Feb. 9)

Skeletons in the Closet

Terrance Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr. star in this possession movie-with-a-twist. This is getting a Shudder release so keep a look out for it on the platform.

Synopsis: Follows Olivia and her friends as they go to a vacation. After Olivia nearly drowned with a slit wrist in her bathtub after her fiancé’s funeral, her friends suspect that she killed herself, but she believes someone attacked her.

Double Blind (VOD/PVOD Feb. 13)

Double Blind (2024)

Big Pharma is making a killing off prescription drugs. But before they can get approved by the Food & Drug Administration they have to be tested. In Double Blind, one such test has very weird results.

Synopsis: After an experimental drug trial goes awry, the test subjects face a terrifying side effect: if you fall asleep you die. Trapped in an isolated facility, panic ensues as they try to escape and somehow stay awake

Stranger in the Woods (VOD/PVOD Feb. 14)

Stranger in the Woods

Do taxidermists scare you? Remember Norman Bates stuffed his own dead mother and propped her up in a rocking chair in Psycho. In this movie, a creepy guy may or may not have done the same thing to a dog that belongs to vacationers renting a cabin next door. Who’s next?

Synopsis: Follows Olivia and her friends as they go on a vacation. After Olivia nearly drowned with a slit wrist in her bathtub after her fiancé’s funeral, her friends suspect that she killed herself, but she believes someone attacked her.

Unbelievably Cool ‘Scream’ Trailer But Re-Imagined As A 50s Horror Flick

Published

on

Ever wonder what your favorite horror movies would look like if they had been made in the 50s? Thanks to We Hate Popcorn But Eat It Anyway and their use of modern technology now you can!

The YouTube channel reimagines modern movie trailers as mid-century pulp flicks using AI software.

What is really neat about these bite-sized offerings is that some of them, mostly the slashers go against what cinemas had to offer over 70 years ago. Horror movies back then involved atomic monsters, scary aliens, or some sort of physical science gone awry. This was the era of the B-movie where actresses would put their hands against their faces and let out over-dramatic screams reacting to their monstrous pursuer.

With the advent of new color systems such as DeLuxe and Technicolor, movies were vibrant and saturated in the 50s enhancing primary colors that electrified the action happening on screen, bringing a whole new dimension to films using a process called Panavision.

“Scream” reimagined as a 50s horror movie.

Arguably, Alfred Hitchcock upended the creature feature trope by making his monster a human in Psycho (1960). He used black and white film to create shadows and contrast which added suspense and drama to every setting. The final reveal in the basement would probably not have been if he had used color.

Jump to the 80s and beyond, actresses were less histrionic, and the only emphasized primary color was blood red.

What is also unique about these trailers is the narration. The We Hate Popcorn But Eat It Anyway team has captured the monotone narration of 50s movie trailer voiceovers; those over-dramatic faux news anchor cadences that emphasized buzz words with a sense of urgency.

That mechanic died out long ago, but luckily, you can see what some of your favorite modern horror movies would look like when Eisenhower was in office, developing suburbs were replacing farmland and cars were made with steel and glass.

Here are some other noteworthy trailers brought to you by We Hate Popcorn But Eat It Anyway:

“Hellraiser” reimagined as a 50s horror movie.

“It” reimagined as a 50s horror movie.

The Top-Searched Free Horror/Action Movies on Tubi This Week

Published

on

The free streaming service Tubi is a great place to scroll when you’re unsure what to watch. They are not sponsored or affiliated with iHorror. Still, we really appreciate their library because it’s so robust and has many obscure horror movies so rare you can’t find them anywhere in the wild except, if you’re lucky, in a moist cardboard box at a yard sale. Other than Tubi, where else are you going to find Nightwish (1990), Spookies (1986), or The Power (1984)?

We take a look at the most searched horror titles on the platform this week, hopefully, to save you some time in your endeavor to find something free to watch on Tubi.
