Vendor Spotlight – Morbid Kulture

Published

on

Horror conventions have been bringing creators, vendors, celebrity guests, and of course, fans together for years now. Not even a worldwide pandemic could divide the horror community as we saw virtual cons and small pop-up locations spring up over the past few years. Like-minded fans feel as though conventions are home and are tremendously pleased that some normalcy has been restored, and our favorite cons are swinging back in full throttle.

Horror Conventions Are Back!

The experience of attending your first horror convention is unmatched. I remember attending my first con, just like it was yesterday. Mesmerized by the celebrity guests, fans, and of course, the wonderful vendors. Attending a horror convention was a fantasy come to life – surrounded by everything scary and spooky and sharing these unique experiences. Conventions are happening in different parts of the United States all year long, and the popularity of these events is growing.

I wanted to take the time each month and showcase a different vendor in an article titled “Vendor Spotlight.” I thought it would be a fantastic opportunity to showcase a fairly new vendor that frequently showcases at conventions and pop-up events in the Southern California area, and that is Morbid Kulture. Known for its unique stamp on horror, Morbid Kulture creates bottle cap openers, throw rugs, coffin shelves, spooky handbags, and horror decals, to name a few. All of the items are handmade, making the product and the purchase very special. Nobody in the whole world will have the same thing, and that is pretty damn special!

About Morbid Kulture:

Morbid Kulture was started by Monster Mike and his bride Angie back in 2018. Both Mike and Angie have always been into horror, even before the two got together. Angie was best described as a goth girl into punk rock who wore black clothing. Mike was the rebellious type, while everyone was into G.I. Joe and Vanilla Ice, Mike was into the likes of the Dream Master Freddy Krueger and goth rock performer Marilyn Manson. For Angie and Mike, horror cons were considered a date night; these shows presented a unique vibe for the couple and provided much motivation. Both wanted not only to be a fan of the show, but they also wanted to get involved and be a part of something quite extraordinary. The couple was ahead of the game; they each possessed a crafty and artistic style, allowing their imaginations to begin working overtime.

Both Angie and Mike knew right away what they wanted to do; the formula was quite simple, “Create an array of items that we would want to purchase, the criteria – spooky, creepy, anything scary. The items would need to bring the couple joy while creating for years to come.”

Over the past few years, the couple and Morbid Kulture have seen some rough patches. Of course, the pandemic made things quite tricky. With cons constantly shutting down and the rising cost of materials, they managed to push through and survive. The couple stuck together and relied on support from the horror community. The ordeal proved that they could get through anything as long as confidence and working hard were a part of the equation.

Monster Mike has a love and passion for cosplayers’, especially for their commitment to their character. “They look like they are having so much fun; I wanted to give it a try as well.” The couple was at Southern California’s Midsummer Scream one year a saw a couple of Jason’s. “I thought me being 6’5, Jason is pretty much the one character that I could use my height as an advantage. A 6’5 Freddy Krueger would be a bit unusual,” Monster Mike said. The couple decided to get to work. A Jason mask was created, and weathered clothes were prepared. Angie created a handmade jacket to perfection; nearly 100 photos were examined for reference.

When Monster Mike was asked where he would like to see Morbid Kulture ten years from now, he said, “I would love to be still doing shows and events, but nationwide. Traveling across the United States, spreading creepy fear for all to enjoy along with meeting new people and artists along the way.”

It’s always nice to see a reunion in the world of horror. Following a competitive bidding war, A24 has secured the rights to the new action thriller film Onslaught. Adam Wingard (Godzilla vs. Kong) will be directing the film. He will be joined by his longtime creative partner Simon Barret (You’re Next) as the scriptwriter.

For those unaware, Wingard and Barret made a name for themselves while working together on films such as You’re Next and The Guest. The two creatives are card carrying horror royalty. The pair have worked on films such as V/H/S, Blair Witch, The ABC’s of Death, and A Horrible Way to Die.

An exclusive article of out Deadline gives us the limited information we have on the topic. Although we don’t have much to go on, Deadline does offer the following information.

A24

Director Louis Leterrier Creating New Sci-Fi Horror Film “11817”

Published

Louis Leterrier

According to an article from Deadline, Louis Leterrier (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) is about to shake things up with his new Sci-Fi horror film 11817. Leterrier is set to produce and direct the new Movie. 11817 is penned by the glorious Mathew Robinson (The Invention of Lying).

Rocket Science will be taking the film to Cannes in search of a buyer. While we don’t know much about what the film looks like, Deadline offers the following plot synopsis.

“The film watches as inexplicable forces trap a family of four inside their house indefinitely. As both modern luxuries and life or death essentials begin to run out, the family must learn how to be resourceful to survive and outsmart who — or what — is keeping them trapped…”

“Directing projects where the audience gets behind the characters has always been my focus. However complex, flawed, heroic, we identify with them as we live through their journey,” said Leterrier. “It’s what excites me about 11817‘s wholly original concept and the family at the heart of our story. This is an experience that movie audiences won’t forget.”

Leterrier has made a name for himself in the past for working on beloved franchises. His portfolio includes gems such as Now You See Me, The Incredible Hulk, Clash of The Titans, and The Transporter. He is currently attached to create the final Fast and the Furious film. However, it will be interesting to see what Leterrier can do working with some darker subject material.

That’s all the information we have for you at this time. As always, make sure to check back here for more news and updates.
