Tightwad Terror Tuesday – Free Movies

Hey Tightwads!  Time for another batch of free movies from iHorror and the internet.  Away we go…!

Oculus (2013), courtesy Relativity Media.

Oculus

Oculus is about a young man who murdered his father after the man killed his mother.  He was sentenced to a mental hospital, and upon his release, his sister brings him home.  But their troubles are not over there; the sister reveals that in order to break their family curse, they have to destroy an antique mirror that was responsible for their father’s madness.  But the mirror has other ideas.

Although it’s his second movie, this 2013 offering introduced the world to horror master Mike Flanagan.  The cast includes Karen Gillan, Brenton Thwaites, Katee Sackhoff, and Rory Cochrane.  Oculus is one of the creepier movies of the 21st century, and you can find it here at TubiTV.

Love (2011), courtesy Angels & Airwaves.

Love

Love is a quirky little 2011 science fiction film about a futuristic astronaut who travels to the now-deserted International Space Station to see what repairs are needed in order to get it functional again.  While in orbit, an apocalypse occurs on Earth, leaving the man stranded at the station.

Surreal and philosophical, Love is the directorial debut of William Eubank, who would go on to make The Signal a couple of years later and Underwater a few years ago.  Love also includes a dreamy, shoegazing soundtrack score by the band Angels & Airwaves.  This one’s a slow burn, but it pays off in the end.  If you’ve got a little patience, check out Love right here at Crackle.

Found (2012), courtesy Alameda Entertainment.

Found

Contrary to what the title may imply, Found is not a found-footage horror film.  It’s actually about a young boy who discovers that his older brother is a serial killer.

This 2012 offering is a very brutal and disturbing film, thanks in part to a brutal and disturbing movie-within-the-movie called Headless.  The most intriguing aspect of Found is that it’s basically a coming-of-age movie, just with the main character doing his growing up with a homicidal maniac for a brother.  This one’s got one of the best opening scenes in recent memory, so at least check out the first ten minutes or so.  You can check it out here at TubiTV.

Bad Ben (2016), courtesy Nigel Bach.

Bad Ben

Bad Ben is a 2016 no-budget movie about a man who buys a house and immediately experiences strange goings-on.  He sets up some cameras and discovers that his new home is haunted.

Yes, Bad Ben is a found footage movie.  It’s an average-at-best offering, but what makes it impressive is that everything in the movie, from the writing to the acting to the editing, was done by a single guy named Nigel Bach.  And that’s not all – Bach has made nine Bad Ben movies in mostly the same way.  His perseverance is really quite inspiring.  You can see all of them for free on Vudu, but it’s best to start with Bad Ben right here.

Deadware (2021), courtesy NoSleep Films.

Deadware

Deadware is about two friends in the late nineties who discover the magic of webcams.  While chatting, they find an internet browser game, and decide to play through it together while screen sharing.  What could possibly go wrong?

This 2021 flick isn’t as creative as other screen-horror movies like Host or Unfriended, but the concept is fun.  It loses stream at the end, but it’s only 68 minutes so you probably have the time for it.  Check out Deadware here at TubiTV.

Published

on

This is one unexpected and unique horror film that will cause controversy. According to Deadline, a new horror film titled The Carpenter’s Son will be directed by Lotfy Nathan and star Nicolas Cage as the carpenter. It is set to start filming this summer; no official release date has been given. Check out the official synopsis and more about the film below.

Nicolas Cage in Longlegs (2024)

The film’s synopsis states: “The Carpenter’s Son tells the dark story of a family hiding out in Roman Egypt. The son, known only as ‘the Boy’, is driven to doubt by another mysterious child and rebels against his guardian, the Carpenter, revealing inherent powers and a fate beyond his comprehension. As he exercises his own power, the Boy and his family become the target of horrors, natural and divine.”

The movie is directed by Lotfy Nathan. Julie Viez is producing under the Cinenovo banner with Alex Hughes and Riccardo Maddalosso at Spacemaker and Cage on behalf of Saturn Films.  It stars Nicolas Cage as the carpenter, FKA Twigs as the mother, young Noah Jupe as the boy, and Souheila Yacoub in an unknown role.

FKA Twigs in The Crow (2024)

The story is inspired by the apocryphal Infancy Gospel of Thomas which dates to the 2nd century AD and recounts the childhood of Jesus. The author is thought to be Judas Thomas aka “Thomas the Israelite” who wrote these teachings. These teachings are regarded as inauthentic and heretical by Christian Scholars and are not followed in the New Testament.

Noah Jupe in A Quite Place: Part 2 (2020)
Souheila Yacoub in Dune: Part 2 (2024)

This horror film was unexpected and will cause tons of controversy. Are you excited about this new film, and do you think it will do well at the box office? Let us know in the comments below. Also, check out the latest trailer for Longlegs starring Nicolas Cage below.

PG-13 Rated ‘Tarot’ Underperforms at the Box Office

Published

on

Tarot starts off the summer horror box office season with a whimper. Scary movies like these are usually a fall offering so why Sony decided to make Tarot a summer contender is questionable. Since Sony uses Netflix as their VOD platform now maybe people are waiting to stream it for free even though both critic and audience scores were very low, a death sentence to a theatrical release.

Although it was a fast death — the movie brought in $6.5 million domestically and an additional $3.7 million globally, enough to recoup its budget — word of mouth might have been enough to convince moviegoers to make their popcorn at home for this one.

Tarot

Another factor in its demise might be its MPAA rating; PG-13. Moderate fans of horror can handle fare that falls under this rating, but hardcore viewers who fuel the box office in this genre, prefer an R. Anything less rarely does well unless James Wan is at the helm or that infrequent occurrence like The Ring. It might be because the PG-13 viewer will wait for streaming while an R generates enough interest to open a weekend.

And let’s not forget that Tarot might just be bad. Nothing offends a horror fan quicker than a shopworn trope unless it’s a new take. But some genre YouTube critics say Tarot suffers from boilerplate syndrome; taking a basic premise and recycling it hoping people won’t notice.

But all is not lost, 2024 has a lot more horror movie offerings coming this summer. In the coming months, we will get Cuckoo (April 8), Longlegs (July 12), A Quiet Place: Part One (June 28), and the new M. Night Shyamalan thriller Trap (August 9).
