Good Horror Reads: Let Me Introduce You To Some Friends Of Mine…We Promise Not To Hurt You

Published

Glenn Rolfe

Hello readers! I’m Glenn. I guess I’m the other Glenn, as well as the new guy, here at iHorror. A brief intro to me…I’m a husband, father (of three), front desk guy at a hotel, a writer, and part-time punk rocker. You can look me up if you want to know more….

So why am I here? Well, I’m sure you have noticed that the big box bookstores are dying. The mom and pops are on life support or already dead. Amazon is full of writers and their sacred novels (the great, the good, and the very, very bad). I want to be a place the hungry book monster in you can turn to for quality works.

I read, I write, and love horror literature. Some sell it or label it as “Dark Fiction” for fear of people turning up their noses to it. Well, I call it horror and so should you! You might hear “How can you people (you people?) write this stuff? How can you call yourself well-read when you read this garbage? Forget those annoying, judgmental D-bags and trust in your wonderful, bloody horror heart.

Enough of the intros…let’s meet some of my friends, shall we?

I’m going to start you off with three of my currents favorites in the horror writing family.

You want guts? sex? blood? And to absolutely NEED to know what happens next? Meet my friend, JOHN EVERSON. John won the Bram Stoker Award for his first novel, Covenant.  He was also nominated for a Stoker in the Best Novel category for 2012’s NightWhere.  This guys delivers the goods each and every time out. Some are sexier novels than others, but I promise you a very titillating read every time out.

His latest effort hit the street and e-Lines today.

It’s called, The Family Tree:

Its roots are old…and twisted!
The blood of the tree is its sap. It has sustained Scott Belvedere’s family for generations. It’s the secret ingredient behind the family’s intoxicating ale and bourbon, among other elixirs. But only when Scott inherits The Family Tree Inn, deep in the hills of Virginia, does he learn anything about his family, its symbiotic history, or the mammoth, ancient tree around which the inn is literally built. And after he stumbles upon the bony secrets hidden in its roots, while in the welcoming arms of the innkeeper’s daughter, he realizes that not only is blood thicker than water—it’s the only thing that might save him from the hideous fate of his ancestors…

For more on John you can read the interview I conducted with him last week:  John Everson Interview

Next up, meet, MERCEDES M. YARDLEY. Her writing has been described as “whimsical horror” by some, but I prefer to describe it as being like a terrifying, bizarre fairytale…with blood and sprinkles. Her debut novel, Nameless: The Darkness Comes, has exploded with rave reviews. The novel’s main character has been best described as a cross between “Buffy and Odd Thomas”. Pretty perfect. Pretty kick ass!

Her latest release is called, Pretty Little Dead Girls:

“RUN, STAR GIRL.” Bryony Adams is destined to be murdered, but fortunately Fate has terrible marksmanship. In order to survive, she must run as far and as fast as she can. After arriving in Seattle, Bryony befriends a tortured musician, a market fish-thrower, and a starry-eyed hero who is secretly a serial killer bent on fulfilling Bryony’s dark destiny.

Check out her blog here: A BROKEN LAPTOP

Last, but not least….

Meet, RONALD MALFI! Ronald is a master of suspense and one of those bastards that wows you with his power of description and his effortless ability to cast his spooky spells…before you know it, ever hair on your neck is reaching for the heavens while you’re being swept under by his wave of terror! My personal favorite is Floating Staircase. It’s part ghost story-part mystery, all amazing.

His latest stroke of genius is a coming-of-age novel called, December Park:

ronald

In the quiet suburb of Harting Farms, the weekly crime blotter usually consists of graffiti or the occasional bout of mailbox baseball. But in the fall of 1993, children begin vanishing and one is found dead. Newspapers call him the Piper because he has come to take the children away. But there are darker names for him, too . . .
Vowing to stop the Piper’s reign of terror, five boys take up the search. Their teenage pledge turns into a journey of self-discovery . . . and a journey into the darkness of their own hometown. On the twilit streets of Harting Farms, everyone is a suspect. And any of the boys might be the Piper’s next victim.

Trust me (I know we just met, but please?), go out and find the works of these three. . I promise they won’t hurt you. Nightmare are beyond my control though, so I don’t know, get a good night-light. You can click on the book covers to find them on Amazon.

Okay, so we’ve met. And I’ve introduced you to some of my friends. Now it’s your turn to let me meet yours. I want to know who you’re reading. Who are your favorites? It’s nearly Halloween for Pete’s sake! Let’s get our literary scare on.

Cheers!

‘Evil Dead’ Film Franchise Getting TWO New Installments

Published

on

It was a risk for Fede Alvarez to reboot Sam Raimi’s horror classic The Evil Dead in 2013, but that risk paid off and so did its spiritual sequel Evil Dead Rise in 2023. Now Deadline is reporting that the series is getting, not one, but two fresh entries.

We already knew about the Sébastien Vaniček upcoming film that delves into the Deadite universe and should be a proper sequel to the latest film, but we are broadsided that Francis Galluppi and Ghost House Pictures are doing a one-off project set in Raimi’s universe based off of an idea that Galluppi pitched to Raimi himself. That concept is being kept under wraps.

Evil Dead Rise

“Francis Galluppi is a storyteller who knows when to keep us waiting in simmering tension and when to hit us with explosive violence,” Raimi told Deadline. “He is a director that shows uncommon control in his feature debut.”

That feature is titled The Last Stop In Yuma County which will release theatrically in the United States on May 4. It follows a traveling salesman, “stranded at a rural Arizona rest stop,” and “is thrust into a dire hostage situation by the arrival of two bank robbers with no qualms about using cruelty-or cold, hard steel-to protect their bloodstained fortune.”

Galluppi is an award-winning sci-fi/horror shorts director whose acclaimed works include High Desert Hell and The Gemini Project. You can view the full edit of High Desert Hell and the teaser for Gemini below:

‘Invisible Man 2’ Is “Closer Than Its Ever Been” to Happening

Published

on

Elisabeth Moss in a very well-thought-out statement said in an interview for Happy Sad Confused that even though there have been some logistical issues for doing Invisible Man 2 there is hope on the horizon.

Podcast host Josh Horowitz asked about the follow-up and if Moss and director Leigh Whannell were any closer to cracking a solution to getting it made. “We are closer than we have ever been to cracking it,” said Moss with a huge grin. You can see her reaction at the 35:52 mark in the below video.

Happy Sad Confused

Whannell is currently in New Zealand filming another monster movie for Universal, Wolf Man, which might be the spark that ignites Universal’s troubled Dark Universe concept which hasn’t gained any momentum since Tom Cruise’s failed attempt at resurrecting The Mummy.

Also, in the podcast video, Moss says she is not in the Wolf Man film so any speculation that it’s a crossover project is left in the air.

Meanwhile, Universal Studios is in the middle of constructing a year-round haunt house in Las Vegas which will showcase some of their classic cinematic monsters. Depending on attendance, this could be the boost the studio needs to get audiences interested in their creature IPs once more and to get more films made based on them.

The Las Vegas project is set to open in 2025, coinciding with their new proper theme park in Orlando called Epic Universe.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s Thriller ‘Presumed Innocent’ Series Gets Early Release Date

Published

on

Jake gyllenhaal presumed innocent

Jake Gyllenhaal’s limited series Presumed Innocent is dropping on AppleTV+ on June 12 instead of June 14 as originally planned. The star, whose Road House reboot has brought mixed reviews on Amazon Prime, is embracing the small screen for the first time since his appearance on Homicide: Life on the Street in 1994.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s in ‘Presumed Innocent’

Presumed Innocent is being produced by David E. Kelley, J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, and Warner Bros. It is an adaptation of Scott Turow’s 1990 film in which Harrison Ford plays a lawyer doing double duty as an investigator looking for the murderer of his colleague.

These types of sexy thrillers were popular in the ’90s and usually contained twist endings. Here’s the trailer for the original:

According to Deadline, Presumed Innocent doesn’t stray far from the source material: “…the Presumed Innocent series will explore obsession, sex, politics and the power and limits of love as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together.”

Up next for Gyllenhaal is the Guy Ritchie action movie titled In the Grey scheduled for release in January 2025.

Presumed Innocent is an eight-episode limited series set to stream on AppleTV+ starting June 12.
