Somewhere between buried alive and stuck in an elevator there is now a new and extremely specific fear. It is called Whalefall and Trailer 2 just landed.
The film opens exclusively in theaters October 16, 2026.
The Premise Does All the Work

Austin Abrams plays Jay Gardiner. His father Mitt is dead. Jay goes diving off the central coast of California looking for the remains and a massive sperm whale swallows him whole.
He has one hour of oxygen.
That is the premise. No haunted house. No killer. Just a man inside a living animal with a clock running down on his air supply.
Josh Brolin plays Mitt. The official synopsis notes that the lessons Jay’s father taught him may turn out to be the way out, so Brolin is doing more here than appearing in a framed photograph.
Brian Duffield Is the Right Hire

Duffield directs. He also made No One Will Save You, which handed Kaitlyn Dever a nearly wordless survival story and got away with it. That is a useful thing to have already proven before you build a movie around one actor and a very small dark space.
Duffield wrote the screenplay with Daniel Kraus, adapting Kraus’ 2023 novel of the same name. The supporting cast includes Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd.
20th Century Studios files this as a survival thriller. That is technically accurate and slightly beside the point. A man alone in the dark inside something alive while his air runs out is horror by any definition worth using, and the studio knows exactly who is going to buy tickets.
Whalefall opens exclusively in theaters October 16.
