What’s up, Tightwads! It’s coming up on a year of quarantine, how’s it hanging? Let’s spice things up with a batch of free movies, shall we?
A Field in England
A Field in England is about a group of English Civil War deserters that teams up with a couple of alchemists to find a hidden treasure of some kind. Of course, with that many cooks in the kitchen, there’s bound to be complications.
Directed by Ben Wheatley and written by his writing partner Amy Jump, this 2013 historical psychological thriller is a slow burner, but the payoff is worth the patience. Don’t adjust your monitor; this period piece was shot in black and white. You can find A Field in England right here at Popcornflix.
Grand Piano is a 2013 movie about a world-class pianist who is set to perform for the first time in public since an infamous bout with stage fright crippled his career. He sits down to play the complicated piece of music, and…his sheet music contains a note saying that if he makes a mistake, he will be shot dead by a sniper.
Sure, it’s basically the plot of Phone Booth, but Grand Piano is suspenseful enough to pull it off. Elijah Wood stars as the pianist and John Cusack plays the sniper. This one was also written by Damien Chazelle, who would go on to bigger things like 10 Cloverfield Lane, Whiplash, and La La Land. Have a look at Grand Piano here at TubiTV.
Cheap Thrills is about a man who, after just losing his job, goes to a local pub to drown his sorrows with an old friend. They meet a rich couple there that offers them money to perform “dares.” The tasks start off easy, like pounding a shot or slapping the waitress’ ass. But as the night goes on, the amount of money involved rises and the dares get more villainous.
This 2013 offering is a creative and economical little thriller. It’s also darkly comedic. Pat Healy and Ethan Embry play the two friends, and David Koechner and Sara Paxton portray the wealthy couple. Have a look at Cheap Thrills here at Midnight Pulp.
The generically (and somewhat misleadingly) titled Killer Party is about a bunch of people who have gathered for a baby shower. During the party, a strange epidemic turns the people outside into homicidal maniacs, trapping the revelers inside the home.
There’s very little in this 2014 B-movie that you haven’t seen before, but it’s good for a quick eighty minute escape. It’s a zombie premise, but not really a zombie movie. There is a cool psycho clown, though. Check out Killer Party right here at TubiTV.
The Wave is a 2015 Norwegian movie about a geologist who discovers that an unstable crack in a mountain is about to collapse and cause a massive tsunami that will crash into a helpless town. As disaster looms, the scientist struggles to save as many lives as he can – including those of his wife and child.
The Wave is a high-tech throwback to the days of the Irwin Allen disaster movie. It’s also directed by the awesomely named Roar Uthaug. If you’re in the mood for a character-driven action movie full of destruction, you’ll find it here at Vudu.
