Humanoids from the Deep (1980), courtesy New World Pictures.

Humanoids from the Deep

Humanoids from the Deep is about, well, humanoids from the deep.  They terrorize the residents of a fishing town, killing the men and raping the women.  With the help of a marine biologist, the town fights back.

This 1980 B-movie has a reputation for being misogynistic, so much so that director Barbara Peeters refused to shoot additional sex and rape scenes and had to be replaced by a scab for re-shoots.  Despite its smarmy reputation, Humanoids from the Deep is a cool little ecological marine horror film not unlike the vastly superior Prophecy.  Check out Humanoids from the Deep here at Vudu.

[Rec] (2007), courtesy Sony Pictures Entertainment.

[Rec] is a 2007 Spanish movie about a television news team that follows a group of paramedics into a building when they get an emergency call.  Once in the high-rise, the rescuers discover that the situation is much more complicated than just giving CPR to an elderly lady.

[Rec] will look familiar to American viewers, as it was remade pretty much shot-for-shot into Quarantine.  Despite the intense similarities, [Rec] is a tighter movie that flows much better than the remake.  From the shaky camera work to the green night vision lighting, [Rec] is a textbook example of found footage done right.  Check it out here on Crackle.

Leatherface (2017), courtesy DirecTV.

A 2017 origin story for everyone’s favorite chainsaw-wielding villain, Leatherface is about a group of inmates that escapes from a mental hospital with a nurse as a hostage.  One of the inmates is a member of the infamous Sawyer family of murderous cannibals, and he will grow up to be the fearsome serial killer.  But which one?

Leatherface is as much of a whodunnit as it is a horror movie.  It has a The Devil’s Rejects, Natural Born Killers road vibe to it, but the audience is left to guess which of our anti-heroes is the titular one.  Keep an eye out for Lili Taylor and Stephen Dorff in this one.  Check out Leatherface here at TubiTV.

Galaxy of Terror (1981), courtesy New World Pictures.

Galaxy of Terror

Galaxy of Terror is about a group of astronauts that is sent to a faraway world to rescue a crew that has gone missing.  Once there, they find themselves being stalked and picked off one-by-one by some alien force.

The late Erin Moran plays an empathetic psychic in this Alien clone, and she is joined in the cast by Robert Englund, Sid Haig, Grace Zabriskie, Zalman King, and Ray Walston, and the whole shebang was produced by Roger Corman.  Catch Galaxy of Terror here at Vudu.

Rodan (1956), courtesy Toho Company.

In the universe of Toho Kaiju movies, if Godzilla was Iron Man, then Rodan would be Captain America.  Released in 1956, just a couple of years after the original Godzilla, Rodan is about a mining village that, after first being molested by giant mutant insects, comes under attack by a prehistoric flying pterosaur named, of course, Rodan.

Rodan is Godzilla’s right hand man, and this movie is his big cinematic introduction.  It’s a pretty typical Japanese monster movie, but it does have a fun twist at the end, and Rodan is just a really cool monster.  Check out Rodan here at TubiTV.
