Hey Tightwads! Halloween may have come and gone, but the free movies from Tightwad Terror Tuesday remain! Here they are!
The Lords of Salem
The Lords of Salem is musician-turned-filmmaker Rob Zombie’s 2012 movie about a disc jockey who is sent a strange record. The music that she hears when she plays it subliminally tells the story of her town’s brutal occult past.
In typical Rob Zombie fashion, The Lords of Salem is an aesthetically beautiful movie with a one-note plot. Also in typical Zombie fashion, it stars a bevy of cult horror icons including Meg Foster, Bruce Davison, Patricia Quinn, Ken Foree, Andrew Prine, Dee Wallace, Sid Haig, Michael Berryman, and, of course, Sheri Moon Zombie. Find The Lords of Salem here at TubiTV.
Book of Monsters
Book of Monsters is about a young woman who has a party for her 18th birthday. It’s bad enough that the party gets so big that she loses control of it, but things really get out of hand when a bunch of monsters descend upon the festivities. It’s up to the girl and a few of her friends to save the day.
This 2018 horror comedy is a hoot. It’s got a fun premise, cool monsters, and a heaping helping of girl power. Check out Book of Monsters here at Crackle.
One of the creepier found footage/mockumentary movies of the 21st century, Lake Mungo is about a girl who drowns on a camping trip and the paranormal experiences that her family experiences after her death. The family quickly learns that the beloved girl was leading a sinister double life.
This 2008 After Dark Films production works on several different levels, and fans of both ghost stories and found footage flicks will love it. If this sounds like you, you can see Lake Mungo here at TubiTV.
V/H/S is a found footage anthology about a group of thieves that is hired to steal a video tape. Once they locate it and press play, they discover that the tape contains a series of horrifying visions.
Assembled in 2012, V/H/S sports segments from then-upcoming (and now star) filmmakers like Ti West, David Bruckner, Joe Swanberg, Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, and the Radio Silence collective. Some segments are stronger than others (Swanberg’s “The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger” is a personal favorite), but all are worth a look. This concept spawned three uneven sequels, but this first entry into the series is the best. Catch V/H/S here at Vudu.
The Lazarus Effect
Not to be confused with The Lazarus Project, The Lazarus Effect is about a team of researchers that figures out a way to bring organisms back from the dead. When one of their own is killed, they decide to perform their first human test on their friend. Of course, this is a horror movie, so things don’t go quite as smoothly as planned.
This 2015 spookfest is one of those movies that you swear that you’ve seen before, even when you haven’t. It’s almost like you could make this movie by compiling scenes from other, better horror movies. The cast is solid, with Mark Duplass, Olivia Wilde, Donald Glover, and Ray Wise. Have a look at The Lazarus Effect here at TubiTV.
