Hey Tightwads! Halloween is finally here. Here are some free movies to get you (more) in the mood…
Let’s start off with an absolute, bona-fide classic. Halloween is the quintessential slasher about a young boy who is committed to a mental hospital after murdering his older sister. Fifteen years later, he escapes the institution and returns home to terrorize his old stomping grounds in a whitewashed William Shatner mask on Halloween night.
There’s really nothing that needs to be said about this 1978 John Carpenter masterpiece. It is as essential as horror movie viewing gets. You’ve all seen it. You probably own it on at least one format, if not several. But, if for some reason you haven’t seen it, or if don’t own it and want to revisit it, you can find Halloween here at The Roku Channel.
Tales of Halloween
Tales of Halloween is a 2015 anthology of ten stories that all take place on Halloween (so it’s not just a clever name). The bite-sized tales concern everything from demons and devils to ghosts and psycho killers.
Tales of Halloween is like a who’s-who of modern fright flick filmmakers. The directors involved include names like Lucky McKee, Neil Marshall, Axelle Carolyn, Darren Lynn Bousman, and Paul Solet. The cast is packed with horror legends, too, including Adrienne Barbeau, Caroline Williams, Tiffany Shepis, Alex Essoe, Lin Shaye, Barry Bostwick, Barbara Crampton, and Felissa Rose. Check out Tales of Halloween here at Crackle.
The Legend of Halloween Jack
The Legend of Halloween Jack is about a group of vigilantes that tracks down and kills an escaped serial killer, covering up the crime and vowing to never speak of it again. A year later, however, the killer comes back, bent on seeking revenge against those who wronged him.
This 2018 flick is one of those “who’s the villain?” stories. The plot is right our of A Nightmare on Elm Street, except no one is nearly as likeable or as memorable. It’s still a cool lesser-known movie to throw on for the Halloween season. The Legend of Halloween Jack can be found here at Vudu.
Halloween Party is a 2019 movie about a young college student who discovers a strange Halloween-themed computer meme. The only problem is that everyone who sees it winds up dead. While trying to investigate the meme, the student learns some disturbing things about her school’s past.
Sure, Halloween Party is basically a dumbed-down version of The Ring. But it’s got enough charm to pull it off, and it is fun and interesting enough to keep the attention. Check out Halloween Party here at Peacock.
On Halloween is about a town that is plagued by mysterious disappearances around Halloweentime. The phenomenon is blamed on a creepy clown, and a journalist gets more than she bargained for when she goes in search of the urban legend.
Sure, by now creepy clowns are about as typical of a trope as a getaway car that doesn’t start. This 2020 fright flick is entertaining enough, though, if you don’t expect too much from it. Be entertained by On Halloween here at Vudu.
