Hey Tightwads! It’s Tuesday again, and that mean free movies from Tightwad Terror Tuesday. Check these out…
The Final Girls
The Final Girls is a 2015 movie about the daughter of a famous 80s scream queen whose mother unexpectedly dies. When her friends want to go to a screening of her mom’s biggest movie, the daughter reluctantly agrees. She is reunited with her mom when she and her friends are pulled into the movie, and the group must fight off the maniacal murderer villain from said movie.
As you can probably guess, The Final Girls is a fun little meta slasher. Taissa Farmiga stars as the daughter, and Malin Akerman plays the mother. Thomas Middleditch, Alia Shawkat, Adam Devine, and Nina Dobrev round out the cast. Check out The Final Girls here at TubiTV.
The Cabin in the Woods
The Cabin in the Woods is writer/director Drew Goddard’s 2011 mic-drop on the whole “cabin in the woods” subgenre of horror. It’s sort of like two intertwined movies in one. On the surface, it’s about a group of kids that goes to a secluded cabin (in the woods, duh) for a vacation getaway. But below the surface (both literally and figuratively), there’s a secret government agency that, for reasons that are explained by the movie, is tasked with sending out ghastly creatures to destroy the kids.
This ingenious movie both plays upon and subverts just about every horror trope in the book. Goddard’s co-writer is Joss Whedon, and the cast includes fun names like Chris Hemsworth, Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchison, Jesse Williams, and Fran Kranz. The Cabin in the Woods is one of the best movies of the 21st century, so see it now. And see it here at Peacock.
Identity is a 2003 thriller about a group of people who are stranded at a motel in a rainstorm. Of course, they start to get killed off one by one, and each of them gets suspicious of the others. The trapped ensemble includes lots of first-rate talent like John Cusack, Ray Liotta, Rebecca De Mornay, Amanda Peet, John Hawkes, Alfred Molina, and Clea DuVall.
This little whodunit is a movie that has little re-watch value because of its genius twist that, unfortunately, completely changes the movie once it’s revealed, sort of like how the ending of The Usual Suspects can’t be unseen. But, if you’ve never experienced it, you can have fun with Identity right here at TubiTV.
Kiss of the Damned
Kiss of the Damned is about a young female vampire who falls in love with a normal guy and turns him into a vampire as well. When the girl’s sister shows up, her new relationship is threatened…along with the entire lifestyle of the modern vampire community.
This 2012 vamp flick is not your typical bloodsucker tale. It’s got heart and drama above and beyond the fangs. Not too scary, but if you don’t have too bad of a case of vampire fatigue, it will do nicely. Catch Kiss of the Vampire here at Vudu.
Urban Legends: Final Cut
Urban Legends: Final Cut is about a film student who is trying to get her thesis film finished. Unfortunately, her crew is falling victim to a killer who uses urban legends as murder weapons.
Although technically a sequel to 1998’s Urban Legend, this 2000 movie has nothing to do with the first film except for the concept, making it a sequel in name only (similar to the Final Destination movies). It’s not quite as clever as the first movie, and doesn’t have nearly as hip of a cast, but it’s an enjoyable little modern slasher nonetheless. Watch Urban Legends: Final Cut right here on TubiTV.
