They Follow is in the can. David Robert Mitchell’s sequel to It Follows has officially wrapped filming, with producer Curious Gremlin announcing the wrap on Instagram on September 21, as reported by Bloody Disgusting and Dread Central.

That is a real milestone for a movie that spent a long time in the waiting room. Neon first announced the sequel in October 2023, and the shoot slipped more than once before cameras finally rolled this summer. Maika Monroe returns as Jay, and the story picks up a decade after the original. Plot details beyond that remain under wraps.

Who Is Walking Toward Jay This Time

Mitchell writes and directs again, and he has built an ensemble around Monroe that leans hard into character actors. Naomi Ackie (Blink Twice, Mickey 17) was the first major addition, joining in June. A month later Deadline reported a larger wave: Jackie Earle Haley, Michael Gandolfini and Justine Lupe, alongside Anna Mirodin, Jayne Taini, Tom Pecinka, Melora Walters, Ben Krieger, Natalie Shinnick and Jan Hoag. Landman star James Jordan was added in an undisclosed role on September 28, which Deadline reported first.

Haley is the name horror fans will clock first. He played Freddy Krueger in the 2010 A Nightmare on Elm Street remake, and he spent Watchmen behind Rorschach’s mask. Putting him in a movie about something that will not stop walking toward you feels like casting with intent, even if nobody outside the production knows who he is playing yet.

The Original Team Is Back Behind the Camera

The part that should reassure fans of the first film is the crew. Composer Disasterpeace, whose synth score did as much to make It Follows a modern classic as anything on screen, is returning. So are cinematographer Mike Gioulakis and editor Julio C. Perez IV. Mitchell told Empire back in June that he “wouldn’t want to do a sequel without” Disasterpeace, and described the script this way:

“I’m very proud of the script. It is its own unique thing, while still being very much connected to the first film. It’s doing something cool that is going to be really fun.”

Neon is producing through Tom Quinn alongside Good Fear Content’s Jake Weiner and Chris Bender, with Mitchell and several of the original film’s producers also aboard.

When We Might See It

Neon has not dated They Follow. It is a fair bet on a 2027 release, but that is a guess, not an announcement. Mitchell also has a busy year behind him: his dinosaur thriller The End of Oak Street, with Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, opened from Warner Bros. in August.

For Monroe, the timing is neat. She has Victorian Psycho hitting theaters from Bleecker Street on November 13, and after Longlegs and Watcher she has become one of the most reliable faces in the genre. Jay is still the role most fans know her for. Neon has not put it on the calendar yet.
