I was really excited to see Dreamwork’s Disturbia pop-up on HBO MAX this month. It had been sometime since I had watched the film, and its a perfect summer horror film. It’s also strangely a comfort film for me. It’s Shia LaBeouf in his charming youthful phase. It’s also a heck of a thriller that manages to ramp up the tension to 11.
If you recall, Disturbia is a loose re-imagining of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window. If you recall in Rear Window, Jimmy Stewart’s character is laid up with a broken leg with nothing to do but peep on his neighbors all day long. One day, during one of his peep sessions he witnesses a murder in his apartment complex. In Disturbia, Shia LaBeouf takes on the Jimmy Stewart role. Instead of a broken leg Lebouf’s character is stuck at home due to his juvenile ankle bracelet. During one of his restless nights he witnesses a girl murdered in his suburb.
It’s a blast and it comes from a young Christopher Landon who later went on to write and direct Happy Death Day and Freaky. It seems that Landon’s blueprint is to take a film like Freaky Friday, Groundhog Day or Rear Window and turn it on its ear with a horror edge.
If you haven’t seen Disturbia you should seriously jump on this opportunity and check it out. It’s a lot of fun as a I mentioned before.
If you do end up checking it out come back and let us know what you thought of Disturbia in the comments section.
