Tried and true fans of the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books, know all about that sneaky Slithery Dee and his insatiable appetite for human flesh.  The original nightmarish illustrations by Stephen Gammell that enticed young readers into the collection of terror tales by Alvin Schwartz, are among some of the most beautiful pieces of art us horror fans fondly remember from our childhoods. However in regards to the Slithery Dee poem that appeared in the first book of the series, we never got to actually SEE this creature. I surely can’t be alone here as I myself, have often speculated what that sea creature of death would look like. Well, we finally have an answer thanks to Indie Horror filmmaker Ryan Grulich and his own fascination regarding the ‘Scary Stories’ series.

“The original Scary Stories was a book that was well worn and loved when I was in primary school. The infamous artwork, the simplicity of the folk horror, and the brevity of the stories all really appealed to me. The Slithery Dee speaks to my fascination with creatures from the deep that persists to this day. I have always loved the sea monster. As a child I enjoyed this poem because of it’s sense of humor. As an adult, I think it speaks to hubris in a way that comments on the internal narcissist and the irony of defeat. As a lake dweller and water obsessed person, I really just enjoy the idea of monster ruining a fisherman’s day.” – Ryan Grulich to iHorror

Straight from the creative chops from Executive Producer of the upcoming Foolish Mortals Documentary, Grulich teamed up with fellow ‘Scary Stories’ enthusiasts Josh Wells, Cody Char, Kevin Gamble, Cameron Sullivan and Amelia Zaborac to help bring the Slithery Dee to life in this fantastic little horror short. The fifteen second film was shot on location in Lake Tapps, Washington on the dock of Grulich’s home, and stars Darryl Robert Small as the fisherman with newcomer to the scene, the Slithery Dee playing himself!

Behold, the hungry Slithery Dee.

Ryan Grulich is currently working on his next horror short entitled, God Save the Cat. A supernatural story that Grulich explains to us came about, ironically, because of Scary Stories also.

“While telling my daughter and her cousins stories from the book during a bonfire at home, she said they weren’t scary and asked for one from me. I told her a story of a haunted house, and a pregnant cat. As the cats were born, one by one they died. After several days of bizarre cat deaths and paranormal activity in the home, a ghost is seen playing with all of the cats having a great time. So in essence this film is about a ghost who is having a little girl (12) kill cats for him because he’s lonely and her parents decaying relationship/complete ineptitude at addressing mortality.”

Sounds wonderfully twisted! Be sure to be on the lookout for this and more from this up and coming horror short filmmaker, while the highly anticipated Foolish Mortals doc about Disney’s Haunted Mansion will be announcing it’s premiere in just a few short weeks!

Watch ‘The Burning’ At The Location Where It Was Filmed

Published

on

Fangoria is reporting that fans of the 1981 slasher The Burning will be able to have a screening of the film at the location where it was filmed. The movie is set at Camp Blackfoot which is actually the Stonehaven Nature Preserve in Ransomville, New York.

This ticketed event will take place on August 3. Guests will be able to take a tour of the grounds as well as enjoy some campfire snacks along with the screening of The Burning.

The Burning

The film came out in the early ’80s when teen slashers were being churned out in magnum force. Thanks to Sean S. Cunningham’s Friday the 13th, filmmakers wanted to get in on the low-budget, high-profit movie market and a casket load of these types of films were produced, some better than others.

The Burning is one of the good ones, mostly because of the special effects from Tom Savini who had just come off of his groundbreaking work on Dawn of the Dead and Friday the 13th. He declined to do the sequel because of its illogical premise and instead signed on to do this movie. Also, a young Jason Alexander who would later go on to play George in Seinfeld is a featured player.

Because of its practical gore, The Burning had to be heavily edited before it received an R-rating. The MPAA was under the thumb of protest groups and political bigwigs to censor violent films at the time because slashers were just so graphic and detailed in their gore.

Tickets are $50, and if you want a special t-shirt, that will cost you another $25, You can get all the information by visiting the On Set Cinema webpage.
