Slasher Dressed as a Bear with Steak Knife Fingers Arrives in ‘Girls Nite Out’ Trailer

Published

on

If you haven’t seen 1982’s classic slasher The Scaremaker – later re-named, Girls Nite Out you are missing the heck out. The film is quintessential 80s sleaze. Best, of all it comes complete with a slasher who goes about dressed in a bear costume, armed with claws made of steak knives for fingers. I mean this dude, took the Nightmare on Elm Street’s parents description of Freddy Krueger and frickin ran with it. We are blessed to live in a time in which Arrow Video is releasing this sucker on blu-ray loaded with special features to boot.

Another really great thing about this little under the radar slasher is the addition of so many great cameo pieces throughout. I mean we got Hal Holbrook, Julia Montgomery Rutanya Alda and Friday the 13th Part 2’s fantastic Lauren-Marie Taylor.

If you are a lover of all things 80s and have a streak of love for slashers from the 80s, you have to get your hands on this one. Don’t let the name fool ya either. The Scaremaker just didn’t make it as the final name for the film. Girls Nite Out fit the slasher/final girl blueprint a lot more like a glove after all.

Sadly, director Robert Deubel only went on to make a couple other made for TV movies. It’s kind of a bummer considering Girls Nite Out really had something going for it. It had that certain 80s formula that could have lead to other opportunities if this one had been fine-tuned  and edited a bit. I mean, a killer dressed as a big ass adorable bear with steak knife hands? Count me in.

Nite

The synopsis for Girls Nite Out goes like this:

The students of DeWitt University are preparing themselves for a night of fun and frolics in the form of an all-night scavenger hunt. Little do they know that they are in fact the ones being hunted… An unhinged assailant, disguised in the college’s goofy bear mascot outfit – and bearing knives for claws, two years before Freddy donned his famous gloves – is stalking the campus hellbent on carving up co-eds. Originally released under the only marginally more appropriate title of The Scaremaker, Girls Nite Out is a decidedly singular slasher flick which comes on like a frenetic cross between Animal House and Friday the 13th – veering from jovial frat antics to jarringly disturbing scenes of the killer shrieking obscenities as he slices up his victims. On this nite out, no one is coming home!
