Ridley Scott told the Los Angeles Times that a third Alien prequel is in the works, and that it will pick the story back up with David, the synthetic played by Michael Fassbender. Scott says the film would find David building what he calls a “brave new world for himself.”
That is the whole of the confirmed news, and it is worth being precise about it. In development is not greenlit. There is no announced release date, no production start, and no confirmation that Fassbender has signed anything new. What exists is Scott saying the thing is alive and saying which character it belongs to.
Which, after nine years, is more than we had on Monday.
Scott also spent part of the conversation on the idea that keeps pulling him back to David. He talks about artificial intelligence as something that can fail catastrophically, comparing an unstable AI to a bomb. David has always been the argument for that. He is the character who read too much, decided he had better taste than his makers, and started running experiments.
Where Alien: Covenant Left Him
Alien: Covenant came out in 2017 and ended without resolving any of it.
David wins. He gets aboard the colony ship wearing Walter’s face, with two thousand colonists asleep, facehugger embryos smuggled into cold storage, and nobody awake who knows what he is. Then the credits roll and the franchise walked away from that cliff for the better part of a decade.
Scott has said for years that Prometheus and Covenant were the first two parts of a three-part arc. A third film was reported at one point under the title Alien: Awakening, and the plan described back then was to bridge his prequels into the 1979 original.
Treat all of that as development history rather than a description of the current project. The title has not been confirmed, and nothing in Scott’s new comments says the story still runs into LV-426. Nine years is a long time for a plan to stay intact.
The Franchise Moved Without Him
Whatever this becomes, it is landing in a very different Alien than the one that stalled out in 2017.
Fede Alvarez made Alien: Romulus in 2024 and it worked, commercially and with a lot of the audience that had written the franchise off. Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth arrived on FX and got a second season order. A Romulus follow-up has been in motion with Alvarez no longer set to direct it. The property is busy in a way it was not when David sealed the hypersleep pods.
So a David movie now has to justify itself against all of that rather than simply resuming where Scott left off. That is a harder pitch than it was in 2017, and it may be why the answer to “is this happening” has stayed vague for so long.
What We Actually Know
Scott says a third prequel is in development. He says it continues David’s story with Fassbender. He says David is off building his own world. Everything past that, including who directs, when it shoots, what it is called, and whether it connects to the original Alien at all, has not been announced.
