Return of the Living Dead III and Waxwork Headed to Blu-Ray

Published

on

While Scream Factory has arguably carved out a niche for itself as the preeminent American distributor of 80’s and 90’s cult classic horror films on Blu-Ray, Lionsgate has just introduced a new challenge to that throne. Lionsgate has opted to resurrect the Vestron Video name and logo for a new line of horror Blu-Ray releases, beginning with the previously rumored Chopping Mall, which arrives on September 27th and features a bunch of new extras and a restored transfer.

That said, Chopping Mall may only be the calm before the Vestron storm, as Lionsgate has also announced the HD disc debuts of a few more long sought after titles. Perhaps most notably, Brian Yuzna’s zombie sequel Return of the Living Dead III is heading to Blu-Ray, after getting almost totally shafted in the DVD department. For those unfamiliar, ROTLDIII focuses on star-crossed teenage lovers Curt (J. Trevor Edmond) and Julie (Mindy Clarke).

After a motorcycle accident claims Julie’s life, Curt sneaks onto his dad’s military base and uses the series’ infamous Trioxin gas to resurrect her, inadvertently beginning a zombie plague. Regarded by many as the best sequel in the franchise, ROTLDIII drops the humor that dominated the first two and in doing so creates a surprisingly effective and emotional tale. There’s also lots and lots of gore. No word yet on whether the Blu-Ray will include the unrated cut that hasn’t been officially released since the VHS days.

Waxwork remake

Also on its way to Blu-Ray is Waxwork, along with its sequel Waxwork II: Lost in Time. The Waxwork films will be packaged as a double feature, much like they were on on DVD. Starring Gremlins’ Zach Galligan and April Fool’s Day’s Deborah Foreman, Waxwork features a group of friends who visit a mysterious new wax museum, only to end up under threat from the building’s living exhibits. Waxwork II is more of a comedy, with each time period traveled to by Galligan’s character – Foreman’s character was recast between entries – essentially functioning as an extended parody of a classic horror film.

All of the above movies are getting the collector’s edition treatment on Blu-Ray, although release date or special features info has yet to be announced. CHUD II: Bud the Chud is also getting a Lionsgate/Vestron BD release, but considering its awful reputation among genre fans, one wonders why they’re putting that out instead of the much more well-regarded original CHUD film.

Watch ‘The Burning’ At The Location Where It Was Filmed

Published

on

Fangoria is reporting that fans of the 1981 slasher The Burning will be able to have a screening of the film at the location where it was filmed. The movie is set at Camp Blackfoot which is actually the Stonehaven Nature Preserve in Ransomville, New York.

This ticketed event will take place on August 3. Guests will be able to take a tour of the grounds as well as enjoy some campfire snacks along with the screening of The Burning.

The Burning

The film came out in the early ’80s when teen slashers were being churned out in magnum force. Thanks to Sean S. Cunningham’s Friday the 13th, filmmakers wanted to get in on the low-budget, high-profit movie market and a casket load of these types of films were produced, some better than others.

The Burning is one of the good ones, mostly because of the special effects from Tom Savini who had just come off of his groundbreaking work on Dawn of the Dead and Friday the 13th. He declined to do the sequel because of its illogical premise and instead signed on to do this movie. Also, a young Jason Alexander who would later go on to play George in Seinfeld is a featured player.

Because of its practical gore, The Burning had to be heavily edited before it received an R-rating. The MPAA was under the thumb of protest groups and political bigwigs to censor violent films at the time because slashers were just so graphic and detailed in their gore.

Tickets are $50, and if you want a special t-shirt, that will cost you another $25, You can get all the information by visiting the On Set Cinema webpage.
